On the 18th of May in 1980, Ian Curtis, the lead vocal of Joy Division, tormented by epileptic seizures, mental health issues and a true fear of what's next (the band was about to leave for their first tour out of the UK, to the USA) took his own life.

I only discovered Joy Division a few years after this happened, it was in my 7th Grade Year, around 84-85... The album, Unknown Pleasures, changed so many things for me. It truly was when music became mine, not my parents.

I remember finding out what happened to Ian, to Joy Division (leading me to inevitably finding New Order) shortly after initially discovering them... It had such a profound effect. His music, his voice, his lyrics reached me in some of my darkest times, dare I say pulled me out of them. I know I'm not alone in that journey, and I wish he had known that he was not, either.
