Over five intense and very fun days inside the dome at CULTVR in Cardiff, artists from Wales and Québec came together to experiment, collaborate and prototype new immersive audiovisual ideas.

The week mixed R&D, masterclasses, dome testing and plenty of creative tinkering.

Some highlights from the group included experimenting with spatial audio soundscapes, building live visuals in Unreal Engine and exploring how natural environments can interact with digital spaces.

As one artist described it, the process felt like “working as a band, each person bringing a different instrument to the collaboration.”

Immersive Labs is a co creation programme bringing together artists from Wales and Québec to develop new immersive work for fulldome environments.

Exploring the technical potential of #VirtualProduction:
To achieve an orbital camera move, we used a turntable and integrated a custom-built encoder that streams rotation data to @unrealengine , allowing the virtual camera to orbit in real time.
We also required a solution to control lighting based on rotation data. I developed a solution that makes traditional pixel mapping with video source unnecessary and is opening up creative flexibility on set.

Explore the cutting-edge possibilities of full-dome performances with Off World Live’s Live-Streaming Toolkit and 360 Degree Camera, recently showcased at SAT Montreal by visionary artist Mathew D. Gantt.

Gantt created a real-time rendered performance, combining interactive sound objects, virtual soundscapes and spatialized sounds in Unreal Engine.

Our feature covers the full technical workflow as well as the artistic inspiration behind the work.
