Thisispaper Newsletter 196: Where the Garden Ends
Five houses and two public structures where the boundary between shelter and landscape is a design decision, not a default.

Minimalism as rigour, not trend. Architecture, interiors, furniture, and objects where reduction reveals rather than restricts. Spaces and things stripped to their essential form — where every remaining element earns its presence. A growing collection.

‘House in a Garden’ contains two main wings within the house, both with distinctly different agendas; one open and fluid, the other closed and private; one for living and connecting, one for sleeping and retreating.

Adjacent the Birrarung, the home sits above ground level on large supporting feet, each defining pockets or eddies within the flowing landscape down to the river. Some extend to the level above creating voids to the sky for larger trees to grow, some are capped below the timber soffit compressing into a shadowed, quiet space rich with undergrowth.

A dwelling embedded within foliage above the Birrarung, the home engages with the quiet experience of being within a dense landscape.

Entry is through rich undergrowth and tree canopies, colouring and adjusting the atmosphere of the living areas above.

When designing homes we enjoy considering the daily rituals that will unfold within, over the course of a day, a week, a year, a lifetime. How might the architecture bring joy to these moments with sensitive material and spatial gestures?

Cheer Squad have done some wonderful work capturing and condensing some of these moments over the course of a day, tracking the interplay of light, shadow and materiality at our Mary Street House.

“Twin” Bench in American red oak

@aaron_roberts_eo and @kimbridgland designed this bench as a seat for two, giving plenty of space for each. Inspired by rural Victorian water tanks and the structural photography of Bernd and Hilla Becher, the pair explored how curves meet straight edges and how joints might ‘slip past each other.’ The back of the bench expresses this interplay most clearly, turning function into sculptural form.

Melbourne-based @editionoffice, founded in 2016 by Aaron and Kim, approaches each project iteratively, letting past work inform new designs. Their architecture balances bold forms, respect for the Australian landscape, and materials that ‘speak for themselves’.
