As stewardess and caretaker of the community organic garden, Stephanie Carranza was reminded about what we might not want to wholly lose—may even want to restore; thus inspired to show why farming, and nourishment generally, are such important parts of what defines all animate / inanimate life.

In spring of 2023, on a farm just outside of Paris, Carranza planted her indigenous seeds, cultivating organic vegetables that later were harvested and used to convene in a participatory meal preparation and food tasting with the public at INTERVALS. To initiate this cooking ritual and feasting ceremony, Æther Studio invited Mathilde Duraz to co-design and facilitate a starter dish using seasonal ingredients from our garden.

Standing at the thresholds of what is shape-shifting, our global initiative intertwines family and community, bringing new life to the common ground we share. To introduce local and translocal origins to various networks, Æther Studio commissioned creator, Nicolas Barbera, to handcraft a mobile seeds box as a sacred offering to our ancestral roots.

Keeping with the trickster spirit, creators Stephanie Carranza, Natasha Le Sourd, and Lucie Audau co-imagine a transient sanctuary to disturb the commodification of relationships and distress our habitual ways of thinking about public order and food security. Le Sourd and Audau cultivated an ecosystem of hybrid sculptures and diverse installations, exploring the terrain of radical hospitality in a communal act of celebration.

“Food stands at the intersection of culture and community building, making it a powerful tool for social change.” — Stephen Satterfield

To celebrate the birth of Æther Studio and its garden project, this past Autumn [2023] we launched our first public initiative, INTERVALS, an invitation to co-create. In the heart of Paris, this four day animist event hosted over twenty artists and facilitators from diverse practices and backgrounds along with a participatory food preparation and meal, and accompanied by improvised performances, workshops, and DJ sets. 🌐

Glass Gem Corn, Zea Mays

“Collection site: Developed by Carl Barnes in Oklahoma from crossing several different Native American corn varieties including varieties from the Cherokee and Pawnee.

Historical origins: Corn began to be domesticated from a wild grass called Teosinte, beginning around 9,000 years ago in Mexico. This early domesticated corn was a type of popcorn with small kernels and small ears. There is evidence to suggest the cultivation of corn in the US as early as 2100 BC in Arizona’s Santa Cruz Valley and Northwestern New Mexico. It is thought that these corns resembled popcorn.” — @nativeseedssearch
