Everest season is in full swing. Over 1,000 climbing permits were issued for Nepal's peaks this spring, with climbers from 55 countries descending on the Khumbu valley. This week alone, hundreds of summits were recorded - including reknowned Sherpas summiting for more than the 30th time in a row.

But that's nothing compared to the amount of tourists and trekkers who come here: estimated around 60 000 per season. With this many people flowing through the Khumbu valley, the pressure on the region is immense. More than 200 tonnes of waste are generated in the Everest area every single year.

That's exactly why I keep shouting about the work @sagarmathanext is doing. Me and the @ivarstudios team have spent over a decade documenting the waste crisis in the shadow of Everest, and our film and VR experience are shown daily at the Sagarmatha Next center, located just above Namche Bazaar at 3,775 meters. Since opening, more than 15,000 visitors have been educated there, and the 'Carry Me Back' programme has already removed 10,000 kg of trash from the trails.

If you're trekking to Everest basecamp this season, please drop in. It's one of those places that genuinely changes how you walk the trail.

Ten years ago my brother Fredrik and I started a little immersive studio and named it after our grandfather's best friend.

We had no real business plan. We had a 360 camera (or five), backgrounds in journalism and communication, a strong interest in science and storytelling.

Since then we've filmed and captured experiences all over the world: 360-video from inside a wild lion pride for National Geographic, 3D-scanned temples in Sumatra and glaciers across the Nordics, built interactive history lessons for museums, produced countless 360-videos and worked in the fulldome space trying to make important science feel like something you experience rather than read.

The best part is still the same as on day one: regularly finding ourselves sitting across the table from experts, scientists and conservationists who knows infinitely more about their subject than we do - with us trying to turn their knowledge into a story a child (or adult!) will lean into instead of scroll past. That, and the fact that I can do all this with the best possible partner: my dear brother @rapparsven. Well done bro!

We've just launched a new website for @ivarstudios that tries to capture what we want our next ten years to look like, even more focus on science-based storytelling, even more collaborations with researchers, even more work for classrooms (clearly starting our own families has made an impact on what we want to work with…)

Link is in my bio, and if there's a story you think we should be telling together, send me a DM. I'd love to hear from you.

By popular request, "Exploring Son Doong" is back online in a remastered version.

It’s been nearly a decade since we first trekked into the world’s largest cave to immortalize it in 360 degree images, and I’m glad to share a remastered version of the story at sondoong360.com (link in my bio).

This project was my first large-scale expedition with support from @insidenatgeo and in many ways this project was the spiritual start of our immersive journey with @ivarstudios.

The original story went offline on natgeo.com last year, and I actually had a lot of people reaching out to me: wondering how to view it (a lot of them were geology professors, using it in their classrooms!).

It’s a reminder of why digital conservation matters: these interactive experiences aren't just for quick entertainment at the time of publication; they can prove to be vital records of our world's most fragile heritage.

The remaster now works on mobile too, so you can zoom into those gigapixel images and explore the massive dolines - as if you were there.

If you're planning a trek in the Mt Everest area of Nepal this season, I'd urge you to visit a place that is very close to my heart: the @sagarmathanext center. 🙏

Located just above Namche Bazaar, this vital visitor's centre has already welcomed over 60,000 people and is dedicated to finding sustainable solutions for the waste generated by tourism in Sagarmatha National Park. Despite being one of the world's most famous national parks, there are multiple landfills inside the park: Sagarmatha Next aims to change that by reversing the flow ♻️🏔️

I have spent time here and documented the waste issue in the shadow of Everest for over a decade, and we recently made a film with @ivarstudios that is shown daily at the Sagarmatha Next center. Our film (starting wonderwoman @dawayangzum and voiced by none other than the inimitable @conrad_anker ) and exhibits inside the center will give you context about this region's problematic history with waste. But most importantly, you'll learn how you can actively participate in preserving this unique Himalayan environment during your trek – perhaps even by carrying a bag of sorted waste back down.

Be part of the change. Drop in and say hello!

8 Swedish Glaciers: GONE! We're in a race to make a film about giants made of ice, but the giants are vanishing before our eyes...

The news this week from the @tarfala_research_station in Northern Sweden is a gut punch: 8 Swedish glaciers have now completely disappeared. It feels wierd to make a film that might not be completed before its very subject matter dissolves: a race we are literally losing against the clock.

For our ongoing project, "Nordic Glaciers," the @ivarstudios team and I are collaborating with scientists who have been scanning these glaciers for decades. Their data is invaluable, but their mood is somber. They are scared. They've watched these giants shrink year after year, and the pace is accelerating.

This you see here isn’t a video game render; it’s a digital twin of Isfallsglaciären in the Swedish Arctic, created through photogrammetry. While we're making a film, we're also creating a digital archive of these glaciers—a crucial record, especially as some might disappear before the film is even finished. It's a way to tell their story before it's too late. A digital memory of what we stand to lose.

Still reeling from our visit to COSM’s newly opened venue in Los Angeles—an absolute show of force in the future of immersive experiences. ✨

The sheer scale and visual fidelity of the fulldome experience left us speechless, but what struck us most was the power of shared immersion. Sitting together in a space like this, experiencing a story unfold as a collective, is something VR headsets just can’t replicate. The social interaction, the energy of the room—it’s a reminder that the future of immersive media isn’t just about the tech; it’s about how we experience it together.

We’re excited to be among a select group of creators invited to explore ideas through COSM X Labs — a program exploring new forms of storytelling for these extraordinary venues. We’re thrilled to be in the mix and inspired by the possibilities.🚀🌍

🏔️ Everest: A Story of Trash and Triumph 🚮

Everest season is about to gear up in the Himalayas. In the heart of the Nepalese mountains, the Sagarmatha Next project is tackling a challenge as massive as the mountains themselves: waste management on Mount Everest and especially in its surrounding region, the Khumbu valley 🚯

We collaborated with the local Sherpa community and the organisation @sagarmathanext to create an experience center that educates visitors about the environmental impact of climbing Everest and empowers them to be part of the solution. ♻️

Through immersive experiences and powerful storytelling, we're raising awareness about this critical issue and inspiring action. Because protecting our planet's most iconic landscapes is a responsibility we all share. 🌍
