Cannes Classics, the Cannes section dedicated to film history and restorations, has selected two Flemish projects: 𝐍𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐥𝐠𝐢𝐚 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 by Brecht Debackere and 𝐒𝐞𝐚𝐠𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐬 𝐃𝐢𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐫 by Rik Kuypers, Ivo Michiels, and Roland Verhavert.
Brecht Debackere’s 𝘕𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘨𝘪𝘢 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 has been selected in the “Documentaries about Cinema” category. The film is based on the life and work of Chris Marker (1921–2012), reflecting on memory, history, nostalgia, and how images from the past shape our future. It explores Marker’s vast archive and asks: can we truly get to know someone through their work and the traces they leave behind?
