Delighted, honoured and taken aback to see Jazz House win not one, but three awards at last night’s RIBA West Midlands ceremony.

RIBA Regional Award
RIBA Small Project of the Year
RIBA Client of the Year for Angy & Bruce Burn

‘What distinguishes Jazz House is the evident strength of collaboration between architect, client, and builder. The result is a home that feels deeply personal yet architecturally rigorous, achieving a great deal within a modest footprint and without any sense of excess. It brings delight, ingenuity, and craft to a previously overlooked site, demonstrating how thoughtful design can enrich both the lives of its occupants and the wider urban fabric.’

Svetlana Solomonova, RIBA West Midlands Jury Chair

What a joy it has been to be part of such a rewarding scheme.

Aspire worked diligently and skilfully to overcome the challenges of a highly constrained site; Angy & Bruce truly made this project what it is, and are thoroughly deserving of the Client of the Year recognition. Those close to the project will know just how much this means – Angy & Bruce forever!

Congratulations to all other shortlisted & award winning schemes – fantastic to see such a breadth of skill & varied typologies across the region

Main Contractor: @aspire.building
Structural Engineer: Nedw Llewelyn @bro_consultancy

Delighted that Jazz House, Hereford, has been shortlisted for a RIBA West Midlands Award 2026!

It is an honour to be recognised alongside such respected peers and a diverse mix of ambitious projects across the region.

An act of small-scale urban repair, the project transforms an array of forgotten derelict garages into a quirky, light-filled, low-carbon home. Built almost entirely from timber and reusing every single brick from the original garages in situ, it pairs a fabric-first, RIBA 2030 Climate Challenge aligned approach with a playful, client-led brief. The build achieves an EPC ‘A’ rating (96/100) and exceptional airtightness of 0.2m³/h/m²

Beyond building conscientiously, the brief sought to create a fun, joyful space reflecting the personality of its owners. Now occupied, the house is delightfully awash with light, colour, artwork, sculpture and music; a 1950s jukebox takes pride of place at its heart. Living spaces channel views toward borrowed treetops, giving a connection to the wider setting, without being overlooked. Jazz House grew from a delightful collaboration between a deeply engaged client, architect and contractor - a home shaped as much by personality as by place.

The Pavilion, Castle Green

It was fantastic to celebrate the re-opening of this wonderful Grade II Listed building last night, seeing it full of life once more. Living in the area, it’s been a genuine privilege to serve as project architect alongside a wider collection of dedicated individuals, volunteers and collaborators throughout. Truly a project for the community, by the community - enabled by funding from central government.

The project has enhanced a much-loved, but neglected community asset, providing a revitalised home for the Youth Canoe Club, a new cafe & restaurant (run by @csons_food ), multifunctional community meeting rooms and gallery hanging space.

The Pavilion has the potential to become a real community hub in the heart of the historic city centre, can’t wait to see it fully operational in the coming weeks.

“It brings delight, ingenuity, and craft to a previously overlooked site, demonstrating how thoughtful design can enrich both the lives of its occupants and the wider urban fabric.”

🏆 Jazz House, Herefordshire was recognised in the @ribawestmids Awards 2026 🏆

🏅 @riba West Midlands Award
👤 Client of the Year Award
🏡 Small Project of the Year Award

Designed by @errandstudio, Jazz House transforms a frayed backland plot in Hereford into a calm, light-filled courtyard home.

Once occupied by derelict garages, the site sits within a tightly constrained urban grain, accessed via a narrow lane between Victorian terraces and a local pub. The scheme responds directly to these limitations, using a series of modest timber volumes to carefully balance privacy, daylight and outlook while sitting comfortably within its context.

Reclaimed brickwork from the former garages anchors the house materially to its past, reducing embodied carbon and retaining a subtle trace of what was there before. A high-performance timber envelope, exceptional airtightness, and on-site renewable energy deliver a very low operational energy demand, embedding sustainability throughout the design.

Inside, carefully framed views, sculpted ceiling forms, and a sequence of courtyard spaces create a calm rhythm of light and enclosure, shaping a home that feels both intimate and connected.

Jazz House is a finely crafted response to constraint, showing how thoughtful design can bring real richness to overlooked urban sites.

Where forgotten spaces find new life 🏡✨

We continue our @ribawestmids Awards 2026 spotlight with the thoughtful Jazz House in Hereford by @errandstudio.

Transforming a neglected backland site once occupied by derelict garages, this low-carbon home stitches a lost fragment of the neighbourhood back into everyday life 🌿

Accessed via a narrow lane between Victorian terraces, the design carefully balances privacy, daylight and outlook within a tightly enclosed urban pocket. A cluster of modest timber volumes responds to the surrounding scale, while reclaimed brick from the original garages roots the building in its past ♻️

Built with a high-performance timber structure, exceptional airtightness and on-site renewables, the home achieves an EPC A rating, embedding sustainability through a fabric-first approach 🌱

Inside, calm, light-filled spaces are shaped by carefully positioned openings and sculpted ceilings, offering both retreat and connection. A simple material palette allows the clients’ personality to shine, with bold colour, artwork and even a 1950s jukebox bringing energy and character 🎶

Despite challenging constraints, the project transforms a problematic ‘non-place’ into a warm, efficient and much-loved home, a powerful example of how design can unlock overlooked urban sites.

in praise of small moments

so pleasing to see this staircase come together, having started life on the drawing board as a concept several years ago (ideas often arrive quickly, processes and planning applications usually have other ideas!)

whilst only a small part of a bigger - equally exciting - whole, it’s the little focused moments of detail & craft in a project that can bring the most joy

in praise of small moments

so pleasing to see this staircase come together, having started life on the drawing board as a concept several years ago (ideas often arrive quickly, processes and planning applications usually have other ideas!)

whilst only a small part of a bigger - equally exciting - whole, it’s the little focused moments of detail & craft in a project that can bring the most joy

Spring has sprung, and our inner city residence is nearly ready with garden planting underway, internal spaces cleaned down and furniture arriving imminently ☀️

Located in Hereford’s Central Conservation Area, the house is built to passive standard, and shall sit nestled amongst the historic grain and patchwork of later ad hoc infill. The external roof terrace wraps around the elevated living room, taking in glimpsed views of the Cathedral and its chiming bells.

site update from this extension and reordering project within a leafy conservation area on the outskirts of Hereford.

works are entering the final stretch with the kitchen taking shape, bathrooms fitted and finishes bringing the spaces to life.

the brief was all about enhancing the visual and physical relationship with the generous gardens that lead down to the banks of the River Wye, whilst maximising the use of timber to create a welcoming space that is calm, and filled with natural tactile warmth.

exploring concepts to enhance a listed country home in rural Herefordshire.

The brief seeks to avoid adding significant new footprint, instead working within parameters set by a non sympathetic later addition to the original building, and partially infilling a covered external space. The core focus shall be revitalised kitchen and study spaces that connect to the flow of the original building, allowing all functions to better pinwheel out from the dominant stone hearth at the centre of the plan.

Testing a material palette that will complement the established historic fabric, whilst also finding ways to welcome in daylight and connection to the garden.

Developing and honing concepts for a new family residence in North Wales.

Having fun evaluating the built form against the site, exploring materiality & opportunities for pockets of inhabitation inside and out. A study in shelter and openness - warmth and protection in winter, whilst fluid and porous in summer, always in dialogue with the landscape.

Back in Cheltenham this week to see progress on site at this post war home in the Tivoli Conservation Area.

Since our last visit, the external brickwork to the wraparound extensions has been completed, scaffolding struck, glazing package installed, and the feature pigmento red zinc dormer revealed, sitting proudly alongside the clay tiled roof.

A welcome break in the weather has also seen external works begin to move forward after a relentlessly wet winter, with internal finishes emerging alongside.

For a fleeting moment we had a break in the rain for some spring sunshine this week ☀️

Once the summer heat does set in, our new build residence in Hereford’s Central Conservation Area will be well placed to handle it. Built to passive standard, excited that works on this energy efficient, highly airtight home are on the final stretch.
