Paramiśar
Rašid Nikolić
Roma artist & storyteller
Turning marionettes into contemporary sculptures
Telling resistance, memory, and Roma identity
Through the ancient art of the Paramiśar, Rašid Nikolić transforms stories into acts of resistance, giving voice to the lived experiences, struggles, and aspirations of the Roma people.
Rooted in oral tradition, puppetry, and family heritage, his work carries forward a culture sustained across generations through storytelling, music, and movement.
Fragments of the Paramiśar’s world are presented at ERIAC's Art Space in Berlin, as part of the group exhibition Yesterday is Tomorrow, on view until 24 July 2026.

On the occasion of the 55th anniversary of April 8, International Roma Day, Rašid Nikolić presented a marionette show for the opening of the group exhibition Yesterday is Tomorrow at ERIAC’s Spring Salon.
The European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture is pleased to release the recording of this performance on its YouTube channel and invites audiences to get a glimpse of the world of paramiśa.
Fables, stories, fairy tales and legends are translated in the Romani language with a single term: ‘paramiśa’.
For Rašid Nikolić, the Paramiśar (storyteller) is not only a social role within the romano them (the Romani world), but the highest form of expression of the resistance of the Roma people.
Between 9 April and 24 July 2026, Rašid Nikolić’s marionettes are part of the group exhibition Yesterday is Tomorrow, on display at ERIAC Art Space in Berlin.

I am Rašid Nikolić a Roma artist and activist
It all started with a prototype and a graphic concept.
From there, it became my first art exhibition at the European Roma Art and Culture Centre.
@eriac_org
As a child, my family and I were forced to live in a concentration camp in Italy, simply because we were Roma.
The first time I saw a seagull wasn’t by the sea,
but there, in that concentration camp.
They flew above us, feeding on scraps — and in that desolation, there were only us, the seagulls, and the Roma.
When I finally had the chance to go to school, we were introduced to a book:
Jonathan Livingston Seagull.
That book changed the way I looked back at that experience.
I felt like Jonathan too — searching for truth, for something beyond what I had been given.
This first piece, deliberately shaped like a simple toy, carries that meaning:
A reminder that even in the harshest places,
something inside us is meant to fly

In celebration of International Roma Day and marking the 55th anniversary of the First World Roma Congress, the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture opened the group exhibition Yesterday is Tomorrow, featuring works by Aliz Farkas, Roland Farkas, Rašid Nikolić, and Roxy Toledo Munrose.
Rašid Nikolić’s puppet performance took over the space in a moment of connection and joy. Through his distinctive artistic language, carried by hand-carved marionettes, he conveys personal and collective Roma narratives.
The performance was followed by an artist talk moderated by ERIAC Executive Director, Anna Mirga-Kruszelnicka.
We regret the absence of Aliz Farkas from the opening. We hold the Bura Gallery team in our thoughts and express our sincere sorrow at the loss of their colleague, Nikoletta Lakatos.
