Last week, the Library of NC attended the 2026 NC LIVE Annual Conference!

Our staff hosted an informational table, and our Government & Heritage Librarian, Taylor Wolford, presented alongside Alana Gomez, an educator from the State Archives of North Carolina. Together, they shared practical strategies for engaging youth in civics, government, and North Carolina’s heritage and culture with fellow library professionals.

North Carolina Year Book's were published by the Raleigh News and Observer during the early part of the 20th century.

They are excellent resources to find information about past county and state officials, churches, businesses, and more!

The Library of NC's Government & Heritage Library has a collection of these books spanning from 1901-1941 available to view at our library.

In honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, we would like to highlight the contributions of Donald Hayes Conley, an education leader who worked in Pitt County Schools for more than six decades.

Conley understood that his students' lives outside of school were critical to their success in school. In addition to serving as a school-level educator and district leader, he worked to improve students' health and wellness inside and outside school buildings, ensuring students had access to dental care during the Great Depression, serving as a director of the Pitt County Tuberculosis Association, and advocating for physicals for school athletes.

Check out our NCpedia entry on D.H. Conley, written by a current teacher, Steven Hill.

Primary sources are a great tool for historical research. On our ANCHOR (A North Carolina History Online Resource) website we have lots of primary sources available on different topics.

One example of this is the information available on early protestors of royal government overreach in North Carolina known as the regulators.

There are eleven different primary sources that show the feelings of the colonists, how the royal governor and his advisors were feeling, and also reports on a battle that occurred. See all of this at the Regulators Introduction page (https://www.ncanchor.org/anchor/regulators-introduction). (Link in Bio)

On the 17th of this month, GHL staff had a great time partnering with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for Roots of Discovery: Living with the Earth!

We showcased curated books and resources on the history of American Indian tribes in North Carolina, plus tools for exploring tribal ancestry. Visitors also enjoyed hands-on learning materials and took home free seed packets from our Native Seed Library. 🌱📚
