For 82 years, Helga Knott knew only two things about her father: his name, Lorenz, and that he had died in the war.
This was her truth until a few months ago, when historian Alexander Knob contacted her to deliver the farewell letter Lorenz had written on the morning before his execution, six weeks prior to Helga’s birth.
Lorenz was among the 1,188 men and women executed by the Nazi regime at Munich’s Stadelheim prison and today thanks to the efforts of the researchers at @arolsenarchives hundreds of documents have found their way home.

Buoni propositi per questo 2026: dare un senso all’archivio. 📚
Sorna, 2024.
On April 10, 1991, an experimental project was underway at Livorno Radio Station, involving the 24-hour recording of VHF channel 16, used for rescue and emergency communications at sea.
That evening, RAIwas broadcasting the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup semifinal between Barcelona and Juventus; the oil tankers Agip Abruzzo and Agip Napoli and six American military vessels returning from the Gulf War were anchored in the Livorno harbor; a Na.Var.Ma ferry had just departed for Olbia. On channel 16, around 10:20 PM, a voice, in English, warned: “The passenger ship, the passenger ship...” A few minutes later, at 10:25 PM, the Moby Prince collided with the Agip Abruzzo, and the faint mayday call issued by the passenger ship, which no one seems to have ever received, was forever etched on the tape.
Of the 141 people on board—passengers and crew—only one survived.
The story of the greatest tragedy of the Italian civil navy begins there.

Outtakes from last spring, when I spent a few weeks revisiting places connected to the story of Il Mostro di Firenze for @das_magazin
Still one of the most infamous and well known cases in Italy’s criminal history. 🩸
Thanks again to @roberto_taddeo for his precious hints
