Well, that was a bit good.
The @phoenixcomicuk Phoenix Fest 2026 was two days of pure joy (and quite a lot of shouting).
Multiple venues, over 8000 comic-crazy kids and their adults, creator workshops, shows, sketches and signings, draw-alongs, and two giant donuts.
I spent two full days drawing. My rough calculation tells me that 14 hours of sketching at an approximate rate of one sketch request every three minutes equals... C0MPUT3R N01S3S... LOTS of drawings.
It was huge fun to spend time with the Phoenix crew, catch up with some good comics chums and make some new pals too. I feel very lucky to be involved in this mighty enterprise. The Phoenix Comic really is spearheading a revolution in comics for kids.
If you're interested to know more about this tremendous thing, listen to the latest episode of Sara Cox's Radio 2 Book Club via BBC Sounds, which was recorded at the Fest.
NB: all of the good images here come via the @phoenixcomicuk. The shonkier ones are by me and @marcmakescomics. The mid-sketch snap of yours truly is by David actual Fickling. 📷

A VERY happy birthday to @blast_design_london who turn a staggering 30 years old this month.
Giff and Martin 'poached' me from Trickett & Webb in 1998. Blast was my second ever job. I was their first ever employee.
When Giff asked me to choose a year for my contribution to their 30th anniversary gallery, naturally I chose 1998.
My artwork can be seen in images three and four. Here's what I wrote.
19 98 tracks
Is there a better time machine than music? I don’t think so. Certain bands, artists, songs or albums can transport you instantly to a specific moment in time like no other medium. You can keep your DeLorean. Tunes are my time machine of choice.
So, let me transport you to 1998, the year I started work as a junior designer for Giff and Martin at Blast in their lofty new studio, located at the very top of the five floors of 55 Farringdon Road EC1. It was my second job and I was their first employee. Naturally, I had a lot to explore and plenty to discover. New ways of working. New clients. New projects. New expectations. New priorities. A new corner of London. And new music. Lots of new music.
Like many design studios, we listened to music all day: from the moment we put the coffee on in the morning, to the minute we locked the heavy studio doors after a hard day of creative graft. Back in 1998, Spotify was ten years away. ITunes wasn’t born until 2001. Even cheeky, not-really-legal Napster was still a year away from launch. All of which meant that CDs – those much-reviled, unlovely silver discs – were the format of choice for our studio tunes. Bought CDs, borrowed CDs and burned CDs, we listened to them all.
This particular CD brings together 19 songs I discovered in ’98. Each one was released in that year. Some charted and were international hits. Others, not so much. But I love them all. And they all transport me instantly to good times in a good place.
Beyond 19 songs from 1998, I’ve added four bonus tracks too. You're welcome. The oldest of these is from 1966. Ancient history! Each of these extra songs could be heard reverberating off the walls of Blast 30 years ago and, I strongly suspect, can still occasionally be heard there today.

It's that time of year.
The briefs are live.
The juries are announced.
The pencils are waiting...
✏️
We're very happy to share the news that BB founder @mattbaxter will be Jury President of the @carrefourfrance brief in this year's mighty @newblood_dandad Awards.
✏️
Matt says:
"It's an absolute thrill and an honour to be a Jury President for D&AD New Blood. This award is part of my design DNA, ever since I was lucky enough to win a D&AD Student Award – as they were then known – way back in 1995. An event so seismic, my mum made a brilliant cake to mark the occasion."

Creative students, head to the @d_and_ad website for all of the info you need.

A rare non-worky, all-fun day in that London yesterday with big, special @g.30rg.3 (who won’t be happy about these pics, sorry pal).
A roam around. A visit with @mr_bingstagram. A trip to the building where @katy_hiles and I were wed. Some top scran. And big tunes by @bigspecial_, @gans.brum & @goodhealth.goodwealth who were all excellent, every one of ‘em.

"The journey is always more interesting than the destination." So says Ralph Waldo Emerson in Andy Bainbridge's beautiful map print.
🎤
Huge thanks to @prestongraphics26 for inviting @baxterandbailey.co.uk founders @mattbaxter and @bom_dailey to make the journey to @unilancashire to speak as part of Preston's brilliant design industry week. A case of the destination being just as interesting as the journey.
🎤
And what a line-up of stellar speakers. @jackrenwickstudio's @jackrenwick, @scriberian, @alexprints of @dutchscot, @supermundane, @kellyannalondon, @strawberriedonnelly, and many more.
💛
Dom and Matt loved the chance to hang out with old pals @jonathanharker68, Billy Harkcom of @uoc_graphics and lovely Steve Royle, ex of @thechasecreative and @true_north_manchester. A special thanks to Daisy and Matt of @movewithcraft for putting us up in your lovely Manchester office, too.
🏆
And finally, if you're ever feeling in need of a creative boost, take yourself to @prestongraphics26's studios. As you'll see in these snaps, it's jam-packed with ephemera, packaging, prints and all kinds of visual goodness. Top marks for the long-standing @d_and_ad Newblood commitment too

Working with your best friend. Sounds like fun, right?
Matt & Dom (from @baxterandbailey.co.uk) make it sound fun. But are very practical about how they manage being business partners and buddies. Clear boundaries, over communication, healthy disagreement, and… fishing?
Tune in to hear how they met and what they really think of each other, in this week’s episode Partners in Design.

To partner, or not to partner?
It seems that everyone wants a co-founder – and it does make good business sense. 80% of billion-dollar startups were built by partners. But we’ve all had mixed experiences with co-founded studios.
This week, we wanted to understand what it takes to be a successful co-founder. Joined by a team of guests who get really personal about their relationships, Matt Baxter & Dom Bailey (@baxterandbailey.co.uk) and Gemma Ballinger & Johanna Drew’s (@studiooutput)
Tune in to hear about how to find the right partner – and how to keep ‘em.

As tartan trousered gravel gargler Sir Nod would have it:
IT’S CHRIIIIISTMAAAS 🎅🎅🎅
Last night’s very brilliant #organoke at the @brighton_dome kicked off the festive fun in fine style. It was intensely Christmassy. 🎄
Appropriately, we do sound rather like The Nodster this morning. Time for a lozenge and a look at the Radio Times.

Feast your mince pies on this wonderland!
On a whistlestop visit back up to Burnley from Brighton this weekend, I popped into the mighty Electron Records of Hall Street.
This legendary purveyor of vinyl, cassettes, compact discs, gig tickets, merch and general vibes has been supplying the good people of BB11 with quality tunage since 1946. It’s currently run by Les, whose Dad originally ran the shop.
No less wondrous, Astonishing Sounds (where I would buy too many records in the early 90s, having taken clear and quite stern instructions from the NME) is directly opposite Electron. TWO record shops. Imagine!
Enough waffle. Just look at the merch, man.
#bb11 #burnleyvisit #recordshop #tunepeddlers
P.S. Surely a future Bother feature, eh @hebtroco?

A big BIF thanks to @wearebif for inviting @mattbaxter and @owengildersleeve to talk at the weekend's mighty Brighton Illustration Festival.
Pictured here:
• Matt talking about our collab with the ever wonderful @katieponderillustration for @royalmailofficial
• Owen talking about his beautiful work with @heredesign and @thebalvenie
• Festival founder @deadmansglasses introducing Matt and Owen by talking about... wooly mammoths? It seemed to make sense on the day.
It's wonderful to have this event not only back on the cultural calendar, but also bigger and better than ever.
Other speakers and workshoppers included uber talents @gemmacorrell, @blastskates and the truly unique @tat_vision. And the marketplace featured too many amazing makers to list here (but special props to our friends @wocco, @yukfunwow, @tomtheeggeglington, @peopleiknow, @peony__ and @hiffyulrich).
Back next year @lkapz? We hope so.
