BRINGING A COMMUNITY STORY BACK TO LIGHT⭐️

We were thrilled to be able to support the re-imagining of the iconic St Wilfrid’s Star in Bradford as part of @bradford_2025’s Our Patch programme - celebrating the return of a piece of heritage that hadn’t shone for over 20 years!

Working alongside @shenanigansofnat and Local Residents, we translated 2D sketches created during community workshops into full 3D digital models, that were scanned into the church space to test scale and placement before build. We prototyped structures in cardboard to refine form and fit before beginning production of the custom printed, laser-cut and vinyl pieces for the final fabrication.

We also produced 3D-printed miniature models of the original star as keepsakes; a small way to celebrate the memories and craftsmanship shared by the community during the making process.

Seeing the star illuminated again reminds us why community centred creativity really matters, and how much we love playing our part in that. If you’re in need of help bringing one to life? Get in touch with us, we’d love to chat!

FROM CONCEPT TO INSTALLATION: Turner Prize 2025!

For Bradford 2025, we were asked to create the main Welcome Hub for the Turner Prize at Cartwright Hall.

Take a behind the scenes look from the early sketches, digital models, 3D-printed components and CNC fabrication to the final assembly on site ahead opening the doors. Every element was designed to be reconfigurable and durable, giving Cartwright Hall a system that extends beyond the exhibition and can evolve for future events.

If you’re planning a project like this, we’d love to chat! Drop us a line!

THE WELCOME HUB: IN CONTEXT

Take a look at how the completed Welcome Hub sits within Cartwright Hall during the Turner Prize 2025 exhibition.

The installation brings together recyclable cardboard structures, modular furniture, 3D-printed components and CNC-cut joinery; designed to work in harmony with the building’s historic architecture.

Every piece was built to be reconfigured, maintained and reused, creating a system that will continue to support Cartwright Hall long after the exhibition closes.
Our goal was to deliver a clear, functional and visually confident environment that enhances the visitor experience without distracting from the work of the artists.

If you’re exploring a project that needs thoughtful design, efficient fabrication and a long-term approach to materials, we’d LOVE to talk.

TURNER PRIZE IN FOCUS: 3D Printing + CNC🖨️

As part of @bradford_2025: UK City of Culture, Duke Makes was commissioned to design and deliver the primary visitor experience hub for the Turner Prize 2025 exhibition at Cartwright Hall. The space was the first stop for over 500 visitors a day, setting the tone for one of the UK's most prestigious contemporary art awards.

As part of the project, we designed and built a family of furniture for the show, and today we are highlighting the modular seating system we created.

Utilising both our 3D printers and CNC machines, we created a seating system as a kit of parts that could be arranged in different configurations. The bases were all 3D-printed in a semi-translucent material, and the tops were all cut from birch ply.

The kit included a variety of top shapes to create a range of benches, a stage, and a curved bench arrangement that can be used in different configurations. To enhance comfort and flexibility, we designed removable backrests that slot seamlessly into the bench system, along with custom seating pads plus a storage solution for all the parts. These additions allow the furniture to adapt to different contexts and user needs, whether visitors need a quick perch or a more comfortable seated experience.

The result was a system that could be used for the Turner Prize and also kept by Cartwright Hall for the future.

Ultimately, we wanted to create a design impact without stealing any limelight from the Turner Prize itself.

We are so proud of this element of work we completed. We think it definitely meets the brief we were set by Bradford 2025 and ourselves. When the light from the enormous windows hits the bases, they look magical.

If anyone has any projects like this that need to be brought to life, please get in touch. We LOVED creating this work.
