This self-portrait draws from a moment I had with a painting of Tilda Swinton at the National Portrait Gallery Scotland here in Edinburgh. Her posture, her poise, it stayed with me. What would Tilda Swinton have done? She’d remain hidden, lowkey, outside the public eye. So I brought thatsilent drama into my own world.

ROYAL ROGUE ரோயல் ரோக் रॉयल रोग - “அன்பே சிவம்” [love is god] 🪷

My POV: In a city where I’ve rarely seen brown creative representation, this was my beginning. To be adorned by my true and fluid cultural roots and be unapologetic, this was inside the National Portrait Gallery of Edinburgh, a space steeped in colonial memory. This was no accident, it was a statement. If the walls carried the paintings and stories of their history, I wanted my body to stand among them as a maximal living canvas, refusing absence from the true history of my culture.

Every element became more than styling, the peacock feather for Krishna’s play, the flute made silence more visible, the customized Louis Vuitton bag reclaiming craft, the saree as a fluid form beyond binary, the mango for sweetness and fertility, the umbrella, the jewels, the brooches, all of them fragments of divinity and rebellion stitched together.

At first, I was conscious of my skin, of my body exposed to a public gaze but slowly that vulnerability transformed until I was no longer performing but embodying. Between the gaze and the self, between tradition and resistance, I dissolved into symbol.

This personal project was inspired by capturing being seen yet also being watched. The idea of getting unready but in a state of continued admiration of yourself and maybe the night you just had✨it’s that moment when you don’t want a night or day to end that there is this contrast to be captured: between being admired in a state of beauty from a distant, and wanting to be seen from your own perspective. This shoot hoped to capture the vide of you posing in the mirror and glimpses of your reflection when you least expect it at the same time🙈

The idea of getting unready but in a state of continued admiration of yourself and maybe the night you just had✨it’s that moment when you don’t want a night or day to end that there is this contrast to be captured: between being admired in a state of beauty from a distant, and wanting to be seen from your own perspective. This shoot hoped to capture the vide of you posing in the mirror and glimpses of your reflection when you least expect it at the same time🙈

It’s been a little while since I’ve done a creative piece from scratch like this and what a joy it was to have this come to life! So thankful to the beautiful @anujsvision for bringing my vision to life💐With the help of @stoodio.edi , Anuj is looking unreal in a look that takes on a modern approach to 80s vintage💐💐
