I'm always a little late (in general) but sharing the hybrid-interview feature I wrote in collaboration with @thechiedza about their artistic practice for the current issue of C Magazine 162: Tidal.

One thing (amongst many) that I've deeply admired about Chiedza's practice in the past years is that I feel allowed to revisit moments of the mundane—which aren't actually mundane, but are scintillating with wonder and ideas of inheritance and seeing-differently. Movement and tantalizing stillness. We talk a bit about it in the piece. Check it out irl or send me a message. 💌✨

Sharing some images of C's work and corresponding visual thoughts and queues from my lens.

I’m bad at this, personally, but never too late for a show-and-tell! 🌟 It’s been just over a year since my thesis publication (and two years of work) earned me an mfa status! This is by far the most meaningful project that I’ve undertaken, created at a time when life was incredibly difficult. The primary material gathered, research undertaken, and critical artistic choices made were all part of a rich and hearty process that will feed me for years to come.

I couldn’t have done it without Farihah Aliyah Shah, Sandra Brewster, and Christie Neptune sharing their work and words with me, Tairone Bastien and CamilleIsaacs for being my advisors and guide posts, my near and distant family who contribute to this work and the smaller research projects made in support of it, friends, colleagues, and Tetyana Herych & Michael Bitton for their design and editing.

I haven’t been able to put this out in the world in the way that I would like, but it’s spawned so many ideas in the time since. Excited to take this preliminary work and these seedling ideas forward. 🌱 For now, enjoy the 2024 online version, these fun snaps I took around my neighborhood last summer, and some other behind the scenes material.

I’ve been looking back to the small beams of light from last year (because otherwise it was mostly a horrendous year!). I was bad at photos in 2024, especially in capturing the beautiful faces I know and love, but here are some things I do like and remember through the fog of burnout (and a few of me because someone I love told me I should show my face more)!

~~~
1: as usual, rocks in the water under the sun / 2: divine light / 3: party favors from mes amours / 4: evacuated snails from planting day @gearycommunitygarden / 5: sand on the windiest day! / 6: not working / 7: lovingly tanned (my most tanned summer) / 8: many marigolds and bees this summer too / 9: mount allison library in sackville / 10: flirting with a new hat
11: the aforementioned mes amours on the last day of their exhibition / 12: smooth bone-rock / 13: Feist / 14: The Cube / 15: a day / 16: the beautiful “the currents that carry us” catalogue designed by jordan / 17: nasturtium! / 18: lily / 19: red carnations / 20: left over flowers
I’ve been looking back to the small beams of light from last year (because otherwise it was mostly a horrendous year!). I was bad at photos in 2024, especially in capturing the beautiful faces I know and love, but here are some things I do like and remember through the fog of burnout (and a few of me because someone I love told me I should show my face more)!
My proximity to death is low. I’ve only been to two funerals of two grandparents. I’m getting to that age where I can marvel at fifteen- and twenty-year long friendships. And every year I’m left mystified that time is a flat circle. But, suddenly, fifteen years is no longer enough and it’s heartbreaking. And there’s regret for letting life be in the way (because it’s always a choice).
There’s complex feelings when a friend dies young. Even the well-prepared inevitably still leaves a lasting doubt. I’ve struggled with friendship in my adult life, but I know that I’ll be forever changed and made better by the ability and persistence V and I shared to mutually challenge, parent, rag on, and empathize with one another. There were still so many stories to share. For now, I’ll hold them. Hoping I can keep scream-singing Karma Police on the highway in my car for the both of us.
To the Garcia’s for always opening their home for all of us. To my best friend and brother. x
it’s cold in toronto now, and i have a lot of catching up to do. but what’s on my mind right now is a super hot (in many ways) 5 days in sackville this past august for baby’s first sappyfest—a loving time with friends new and old. here is a little photo/video essay. trying out some new things.
gaza kite in slide 1 by @and_be_new_here_again, “the pond” by mary oliver in slide 13, a coupla lovelies in the last slide!
(i’ve already mourned the unexplainable loss of my other 35mm roll of all of the art and bands—you will too).
it’s cold in toronto now, and i have a lot of catching up to do. but what’s on my mind right now is a super hot (in many ways) 5 days in sackville this past august for baby’s first sappyfest—a loving time with friends new and old. here is a little photo/video essay. trying out some new things.
gaza kite in slide 1 by @and_be_new_here_again, “the pond” by mary oliver in slide 13, a coupla lovelies in the last slide!
(i’ve already mourned the unexplainable loss of my other 35mm roll of all of the art and bands—you will too).
We’re almost halfway through the run of 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓬𝓾𝓻𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓼 𝓽𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓬𝓪𝓻𝓻𝔂 𝓾𝓼, a group exhibition on at @ccoagallery in Charlottetown, PEI. There are so many more images that I’d like to share (in due time!) but for now I’d like to finally show off the work of these incredible artists—their generosity and care, hard work, and trust being so foundational to building my first exhibition as a curator. 𝓽𝓱𝓮 𝓬𝓾𝓻𝓻𝓮𝓷𝓽𝓼 𝓽𝓱𝓪𝓽 𝓬𝓪𝓻𝓻𝔂 𝓾𝓼 foregrounds storytelling and place in the Atlantic region. Particularly, through explorations of memory, medium, and water. I have a lot of feelings and feel incredibly grateful and privileged to have hit the ground running in this way. Glad for the folks I’ve met, and those who I hope to meet someday. 🫶🏽
as i entered the new year without a digital camera for the first time since I was maaaaybe thirteen, i found myself revisiting photos I haven’t looked back on in years—gentler and more forgivingly and with a deeper understanding of the need to document and the ebbs and flows that compulsion has made in my life.
anyway, i leave you with these hanlan’s point kite surfers from an exceptionally dark, cold, and windy day in may 2019. here’s to digging through the personal archives, saving up for a new camera (and rationing film in the meantime), and feeding the micro-photo practice. 📷
Rare work-post to chronicle one of the coolest projects I had the privilege of working on last year: Camille Turner’s (@afrofuturist) Nave, which just won the jury award at the @torontobiennial. A tiny but magical crew of Emilie Jabouin (@em1rj) performing, transformed into Zila-o by Kristen Gallagher (@kristengmakeup) and Clarisse (hair). With Esrey Mondesir (@gadepabouleje) behind the camera in Toronto (assist from Andrew Osei). And Cody Westman (@catseyecinema) going the extra mile (or 200) for us by traveling four hours north of St. John’s, NL for THE church. Emilie on vocals, recorded and mixed by Kobèna Aquaa-Harrison (@paapakobe). Ravi Naimpally (@rnaimpally) provided that completely enveloping final track you can hear, eerily, as you enter Small Arms Inspection Building. And it was all pulled together with a lot of unmatched precision and troubleshooting by editor Chris Wiseman. Thank you all~
I haven’t had a more calming moment since seeing that sunrise on the beach in September. And thatchurch was hot as hell! Ba dum tssss.
