Earlier in May, 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron flew the CC-130H Hercules' final Air-to-Air Refuelling flights over Bagotville, QC, and Cold Lake, AB.

The CC-130H Hercules will continue to fly with 435 Squadron as a Search and Rescue aircraft until this fall, when the CC-295 Kingfisher becomes operational. The RCAF's Air-to-Air Refueling capability carries on with the CC-330 Husky.

Throwback to Canadian NORAD Region (CANR) participation in NORAD and @usnortherncmd Exercise Arctic Edge 2026 in March, which advanced our Canadian-U.S. shared ability to defend North America. 🇨🇦🇺🇸

RCAF CF-188 Hornets played a key role in complex cruise missile defence scenarios, strengthening NORAD’s capacity to deter, detect, and defeat aerospace threats to the continent.

Operating from Eielson Air Force Base and Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, RCAF crews honed critical skills in a demanding Arctic environment, where readiness is essential.

From pilots to maintainers and support personnel, it was a full team effort reflecting the professionalism and integration that define NORAD’s binational mission and an enduring Canadian-U.S. military partnership.

On the evening of Friday, April 24, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre Victoria dispatched 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron to respond to a medical emergency at sea involving an injured crewmember aboard a cargo vessel approximately 300 kilometres west of Vancouver Island.

With the ship still far from port, a coordinated response was launched. A CC-295 Kingfisher deployed first to establish on-scene coordination, followed by a CH-149 Cormorant.

SAR Technicians were safely lowered onto the vessel as daylight faded. The patient was assessed, stabilized, and successfully hoisted aboard the helicopter, before being transferred to Victoria General Hospital for further medical care.

The mission was completed successfully through effective coordination and professional execution.

May 4–8, 424 Transport and Rescue Squadron hosted TIGEREX, a Joint Search and Rescue (SAR) Exercise in and around Trenton, Ontario that focused on practising overland and overwater SAR scenarios with a focus on interoperability and coordination between air and surface-based assets.

The exercise saw participation from 424 Squadron, Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, Canadian Coast Guard, Ontario Provincial Police, Civil Aviation Search and Rescue Association, and international partners including the United States Coast Guard, where they practised and trained in Mass Casualty exercises over mixed terrain and mixed airspace, including night operations. The intent of the exercise is to strengthen interoperability, communication, and coordination between 424 Sqn and partnered local, provincial, national, and international rescue organizations, who often work together during SAR missions.

These types of exercises provide realistic training scenarios for dedicated Search and Rescue crews, ensuring they are ready to quickly respond to any type of incident to help save lives.

Parks Canada and 19 Wing Comox teamed up in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve near Tofino, BC, for Exercise SURF BREAK, a hands-on, multi‑agency exercise focused on responding to a near‑shore vessel capsizing with multiple people in the water.

From the initial emergency call to surf‑zone rescues, parachute‑deployed Search and Rescue Technicians, and beachside triage, the exercise demonstrated a full-spectrum response. Training like this strengthens coordination, communication, and lifesaving effectiveness through efficient patient transfer and smooth teamwork between agencies.

Today, the Government of Canada announced a commitment to purchase a future Royal Canadian Air Force air demonstration capability. After more than six decades of service, 2026 will mark the final season for the CT‑114 Tutor aircraft fleet, which has represented Canada with dignity and pride since 1971.

The Department of National Defence intends to procure the CT‑157 Siskin II (Pilatus PC‑21) for the future Snowbirds team, ensuring Canada continues its strong tradition of air demonstration with a modern fleet.

We are incredibly proud of the women and men who, for decades, have represented Canadian Armed Forceswith pride at airshows across North America and look forward to joining with Canadians to celebrate the team’s rich history, heritage, and excellence in the Tutor fleet's farewell season.
