I love Nigeria so much. Getting to experience a culture full of vibrancy, in every sense of the word, was necessary for the woman I am today. The 22 yr old me needed this trip. I needed to see the country beyond the words that my parents told me, I needed to see family beyond the voices that I heard on a phone screen. I think getting to see the people that I call family was such a a blessing. Seeing the differences and similarities in how we lived our lives was insightful.
I left with a heart full of appreciation. Thankful for the ability to have choices and variety. Things that I didn’t always see people have but deserved. I loved everything that this country has to offer, the community there is just something so different, but necessary.
I came into this trip without my video camera, and that was scary because that’s what I’m so familiar with when it comes to capturing things. @keniciera had given me her film camera to play around with during this trip, and for that bro I’m the most thankful. Little did she know she set a major seed for my love for film. These were some things I was able to capture while being down there :)

-normally on my birthday I would eat some ice cream cake (the personal size one😹) or chill in my room w close company and keep things pretty calm. this year I wanted to drop some pictures of me feeling the most beautiful. one of my more personal goals since my freshman year of college was to grow into my femininity more. At 22 I can finally say that I truly feel the most in tune w that part of myself. I just know that little kid inside of me is the most proud of who I’m becoming.
big shoutouts to @keniciera for helping me put these together. I’m so glad and appreciative that this woman, my good sister, my guyzerrrr was behind the camera. got the most love for you bruv :)

“overthinking is a misuse of your creativity.”
this statement changed the way that I viewed overthinking. I never viewed overthinking as something “bad” but I knew it was taking something away from me. It was taking away my clarity, joy, time and energy.
I would sit in my thoughts for hours and hours. Replaying the should’ve, could’ve, would’ve’s of various scenarios. I would get so lost in my mind. I was unsure of everything because I would constantly try to make sense of everything. Because of this exertion of energy I wouldn’t have much energy to do things that I enjoyed. Ultimately I would be so paralyzed in thought that initiating or moving seemed like too much of an effort.
Once I realized that this was misplaced energy it allowed me to be more conscious and aware of how detrimental this habit was for me. Hearing this statement didn’t immediately erase my ruminating or overthinking tendencies, but instead it helped me to catch a pattern. It helped to be more aware of what triggers it, and how I can respond or react differently when overthinking arises.
I had to make the active effort of pulling myself out my room when I didn’t feel like it. Changing the scenery, going to therapy, being immersed in community, talking to God, and journaling these thoughts out so their at least being stored up somewhere other than my mind. All these things collectively helped me to decrease the rate at which I overthink. From time to time I fail, I bed rot, and I stay stuck in my mind, but know that where my mind was before is not where it is now
also this video will be up on my youtube @3pm please watch share and interact with the video it would mean the most to me. I would love to hear how this video made you guys feel !! please feel free to let me know

Our goal in creating this project is to showcase and capture the diverse ways in which black women at Morgan State choose to express themselves. We realize that self expression comes in many different shapes and forms. Especially being a black woman, oftentimes it restricts our avenues of expression to narrow stereotypes.
As far as inspiration we wanted to pull from the artist @latto Sunday service music video. Her video editorial team for the music video, showcased a flash-cut edit featuring multiple women artists, within the industry. With that in mind we wanted to create a similar theme, using multiple black women on Morgan’s campus.
We hope to inspire and show you guys that black women exist beyond stereotypes and that self expression can take many different forms.

Escapism: the tendency to seek distraction and relief from unpleasant realities, especially by seeking entertainment or engaging in fantasy.
decided to make the executive decision to start posting some of my writing, my only aim is that it touches those in need of some encouragement, a reminder that being present is a luxury we should constantly strive for
👩🏾🎨🎨: attached is a drawing that I made a while back, I got some inspo from an artist on Pinterest, but I wanted it to mirror someone who looks like me, a black girl just trying to find her way thru the blur
