It's so cool having the opportunity to go back post-construction and marry up angles and details with the 3d compared to actual.We got to stay involved with 3d and exterior lights on this project from conception through all of its evolution and construction with this incredible team.

@sinclairassociates - architect
@graceblu - interior design
@norderiksson - landscape architect
@corbinreeves_construction - builder (14 months!)

Why am I posting 16 year old illustrations that don’t hold up to today’s work?

tl/dr: This Bel Air Estate recently hit the market for $115M. Fabulously designed by @sinclairassociates with mind blowing interiors by @erroldejager & one of the last great Greg Grisamore landscape designs in my work, this is one of the most important homes over the course of my career. Feeling retrospective, I thought I’d share a little about it for the tiny group that likes long posts.

This project was the beginning point for many things.The first major project Rob brought me directly strengthened a relationship of about 25 years.

3 days shooting backgrounds with one of those days being uber’ed around the hills by the incredibly kind and talented @christophercourts_studio, hanging off of bridges, dashing on & off the golf course to get photos, trying not to get booted. Sitting on the hillside for hours capturing dusk/night images which gave us that great view gazing down into LA.The weather cooperated in a way that hasn’t really happened since…and at the time, living in the northeast, I wouldjust come out for a few days once a quarter, so the weather needed to be on my side...

For the HOA, we needed to image how well Rob’s design nestled in and reflected a Tuscan hillside.

With this job, I completely changed how I create models….and started using a new rendering system that would last for about 12 years.

And in some sort of continuing good fortune, my alter ego, @eleganceinlighting, was able to provide a few custom lights thanks to Errol and his team.If I remember correctly, he was challenged to have most spaces be in a different international flavor because the owners wanted a reflection of their travels in this great estate.

So many good memories of a project that began a shift in how I approached the work, started & strengthened relationships and became one of those impactful times you get to look back on with great fondness.

If you want to see the even better, real photos of the evolved design, you can find its listing here:

The inspiration for LACMA's Levitated Mass?
Not likely, but it's fun to think so...

First time to Joshua Tree and even though it was a quick-hit visit, we soaked in some very cool geological formations and scenery.Perhaps Dr. Suess drew some inspiration from here as well.Oh, and BTW, step with care around the Cholla's, those needles go deep, fast and take effort to pull out! [...might have found that out the hard way...]

Greenhouse ✅
Sauna in an Olive Grove  ✅

What a joy it was, getting to revisit this already incredible project.  It brought even more fun than I imagined, as it was my first greenhouse and the first time I focused on a standalone sauna.  And what a great backdrop!  Even though the whole project scaled back a bit, we have more fun elements and it is more easily photographable, so I'll get to share some other images down the road.

Recently completed Bayshores project with @ericolsendesign & landscape by @gslastudio.
I love courtyards for their complexity from finding the camera angles to lighting in a friendly but realistic way....and sometimes the architecture does the heavy lifting for you.

Olives or Palms?  🌳/🌴
When we originally imaged this courtyard, Olive Trees were spec'ed at this cool, clean Madison Club Estate.  However during the building process, they made the switch to palms which gave it quite a different feel.  Which do you prefer?
