I am fascinated by ageing.
Maybe because I have thought about my own old age. I assume most people have, at some point. What will my body become? What will I still care about? Who will still be around to laugh with me?
Turning 40 made those questions feel closer.
At 40, you begin to notice that the circle is getting thinner. Some friends have relocated. Some friendships have become victims of distance, marriage, responsibility, or silence.

These thoughts sit quietly behind a new film I have been working on.
The film explores ageing, male friendship, and the quiet presence of death.
What interests me is that these subjects are heavy, but they are rarely only heavy. Even around ageing, loneliness, friendship, and death, humour finds a way into the room.
For me, humour is essential to living because tragedy and comedy are Inseparable. One gives the other weight.

Male friendship, especially in old age, often hides tenderness inside teasing, concern inside complaints, and fear inside jokes.
That is one of the emotional spaces this film explores.
We have shot the film, and we are now in post-production. This is where the pacing, sound, silences, colour, music will help the film fully breathe.
I am currently seeking support, partnerships, and finishing funds to complete it with the care it deserves.
To age is to keep negotiating with time.
To laugh is to refuse to be completely conquered by it.

The image above is a still from the film

I am particularly grateful to everyone who has supported the film this far and the crew who worked tirelessly on this. To my co-ep/producer, @ms__dale, thank you.

It's no news
I'm 40

My mother called this morning and we had a lengthy talk about growing up

She told the tale of how I was born in Igbehinadun and how Mama Aluwe who was battling some measles was the first to carry me and how I eventually came down with measles.

Mama Aluwe, I would grow up to know is/was very agile. She was in many businesses. She loved and was always readily there to assist. She was old but she would walk miles to come support you.

She wanted to help, I'm sure, but I also contracted measles from her.

This just puts assistance into perspective

Even support system can be dangerous

At 40, I now rethink the assistance I give

These were not just good performances, but performances that shifted what we expect from Nigerian actors. These roles proved Nollywood can hold its own against any film industry globally.

It's tough to laugh these days
And when you do, it may never ring all the way to the soles of your feet.
That's the truth
When we say "I'm fine"
Do we really mean it or it's just the next thing to say?
It's a really tough season for most people
It's really hot too
So...
Drink water and
laugh all the way for no reason
Say I'm fine three times.😂😂😂

Ire o, I'm fine.

I love directing very intimate scenes

I want to punctuate the laughter, the thoughts etc.

The idea for me is, if you really love the person and you would do anything for him/her then you also want to eat him/her. Lol

And that is what I always ask- do you really want to eat her when you look at her/him? It's odd, right but it always works.

@theteniola and @tayearimoro delivers another solid performance in our Romcom A GIGOLO FOR VALS which is showing on Goldscreentv.

The duo of @themisterrain and @wumituase are just just plain crazy.

@_tinuade is a new fave too

@omolaraakinsola is the indulging grandma and @emmauduma who is the sugar daddy of Lagos is the father.

2016

10 years ago, I left a tv station where I worked for almost two years for no reasons at all. I just wanted more. I remember being in my oga's office and he asked me where I was going and I answered "nowhere". I genuinely just wanted to leave to try something else. Coincidentally, that move was one of the best decisions I ever made.

I got a gig to direct a small tv show (that never aired) that paid me twice my salary. I thought "na so e dey be". It was in 2016 that Leye Fabusoro came back from NYFA and he wanted to start his own studio and I was the first person he called. We built a team and we delivered the first tv series/sitcom I ever directed- Family First.

That collaboration birthed the glory days of Awon Aladun de, Borokini 1, Borokini season 2, a few ads, and films.

For some reasons, I had friends who wanted to make memes out of my Family First pictures.
