This June/July I have been in the studio creating a new production of The Firebird for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. I can’t tell you how proud I am of everyone involved! @nzballet

It is a great and rare privilege to be working with Stravinsky’s iconically narrative masterpiece full of lush, devastating and triumphant melodies. The chance to re-imagine the world of The Firebird with acclaimed designer Tracy Grant Lord has been a true gift.

Mythos and ecology collide on stage to create an uncomfortable future world, plagued by chaos and starved of love and nourishment. Only the wondrous Firebird/Mother Nature has the ability to reverse the destructiveness of human action and bring balance once more.

This project is very close to my heart and I can’t wait to share more of the exciting world we are building with you soon.

The production will premiere at the end of this month in Wellington, on the 29th of July, and tour to six cities across Aotearoa New Zealand, until the 2nd of September.

Last night was incredible; after two years of creative planning, stress, joy and love we celebrated the premiere of our new production `Break Your Glass Slippers - a Cinderella Story.’ @nzballet

@nzcomposer @emmakingsbury I love you ❤️ Thank you to the army of amazing people who helped to put this mammoth show together!

Our story follows both Cinderella and Prince Charming as they navigate separate struggles but share a common bond. In a world where fancy titles count for everything, peacocking reigns and ‘more is always more’, Cinderella and Prince Charming feel smothered and silenced, struggling to be heard in a story they don’t fit. Only by following their hearts and gathering all their courage are they able to break free and find true love, as their authentic selves.

Cinderella yearns to escape her dysfunctional family and become her own woman, while the Prince struggles with his identity within royal marital expectations.

In the end, Cinderella finds true love with the charming (small ‘c’) Royal Messenger, and as young ‘head over heels' romantics, we see their relationship blossom naturally as the ballet unfolds. Prince Charming meanwhile finds his soul mate in Prince Dashing, the ‘Prince from the Kingdom Next Door’, and comes out to his mother the Queen. In fairy tales as in real life, there can be many kinds of magic. The delight of putting a fairy tale onstage is that anything can happen.’

Now, three years later, Prior is tackling the story again, for @balletireland. Opening in Belfast November 7–8, Prior’s new “Cinderella” will run through December as the company tours to 13 cities throughout Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Prior opted to set this version in 1950s New York City for a more modern feel, with the protagonist, Ellie, as a young Irish immigrant. Learn more about the ballet’s creation at the link in our bio. 💞
