Now in its 16th year, Locust Art Builders (LAB): Summer Art Intensive for Teens returns with the theme “Build for Better”, a five-week, hands-on pre-college program exploring sustainable art practices at the intersection of art, technology, and the environment. 🌎🛠️

Designed for Miami-Dade high school students interested in art, design, and creative careers, LAB offers professional artist-led workshops, studio visits, collaborative art-making, and behind-the-scenes access to Miami’s arts community, all while students work together to build an experimental exhibition from scratch at Locust Projects in our Main Gallery. Students start building day one!

✨ LAB is FREE and includes:
 🍴 Free lunch + snacks daily
 🚌 Transportation stipends
 🎒 Builder Bag with art supplies + essentials
 👕 Artist-edition T-shirt
 📚 Community service hours

🎉 Locust Projects is proud to announce the appointment of four new members to its Board of Directors: Eduardo Ojeda, Greg Schneider, Tatiana Nascimento Silva, and Andre Williams.

🌟 Bringing a breadth of professional expertise, perspectives, and community leadership, these new board members strengthen Locust Projects’ commitment to supporting ambitious contemporary art in Miami. As we approach our 30th anniversary, their insight and guidance will help shape an exciting new chapter of growth and innovation.

Eduardo Ojeda is a Miami-based cultural strategist and contemporary art advisor with more than 25 years of experience at the intersection of art, business, and community. He is the Founder and Chief Visionary Officer of The Art Dome, a Miami-based cultural platform focused on artist partnerships, corporate art collections, and collaborations across the United States and Latin America. He is also actively involved with ICA Miami, NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, and the Greater Miami Jewish Federation.

Greg Schneider is a philanthropist, collector, and enthusiastic supporter of the arts. He is the Director of Tomas Redrado Art Gallery in Miami. A former teacher, he has long championed students, artists, galleries, and nonprofit organizations in our community including New World Symphony and Fountainhead.

Tatiana Nascimento Silva brings 20 years of experience in corporate operations and economic development, including 14 years at Google managing large-scale operations and strategic partnerships across the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. Most recently, she served as Chief Business Development Officer for the Miami-Dade Beacon Council and is the incoming Senior Director of GTM Strategy & Operations at Kaseya.

Andre Williams is a Harvard-educated real estate attorney and President and CEO of Pendragon Title and Escrow. He previously practiced at Holland & Knight LLP and served as an elected Councilman for the City of Miami Gardens from 2006 to 2012. He currently serves as President of the Miami Gardens Chamber of Commerce.

𝗔 𝗕𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗞𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗱𝗼𝗺 is a newly commissioned multimedia immersive installation by German-born, NYC-based artist Johanna Strobel confronting the ecological consequences of human ambition. Years in the making, this project grew from research sparked during a 2023 road trip from NYC to Miami, where visits to Kennedy Space Center and Disney World revealed uncanny parallels between the “Happiest Place on Earth” and the infrastructure behind the “Greatest Human Achievement.” 🚀🏰

Rooted in the extinction of the Dusky Seaside Sparrow, a small native Florida bird whose fragile salt marsh habitat on Merritt Island was gradually destroyed through the development of Kennedy Space Center, the exhibition explores environmental degradation, spectacle, tourism, loss, and the consequences of progress and power. Following the species’ rapid decline, the last remaining birds were sent through various institutions for failed breeding attempts before eventually arriving at Discovery Island, Disney World’s former zoological park, where the final bird, Orange Band, died in captivity in 1987. The species was officially declared extinct in 1990.

The Florida Prize in Contemporary Art, organized by the Orlando Museum of Art, brings recognition to some of the most progressive artists working across the state. Now in its twelfth edition, this year’s exhibition features twelve artists working across painting, photography, sculpture, installation, and more. The exhibition highlights a wide range of visual languages, from text-based works to coded systems, spiritual practices, and deeply rooted personal and cultural narratives.

Congratulations to all of this year’s Florida Prize artists! We’re proud to see so many from the Locust Projects community contributing to the rich and evolving cultural landscape of Florida.

Kicking off with an incredible hands-on workshop, artist and educator Ariel Baron-Robbins guided participants through translating creative ideas into the spatial internet using digital scanning and open-source 3D software. Everyone who participated was also treated to a trove of great resources for solo experimentation.

The night closed with visual and sound artist Richard Moreno debuting Corpse Chrysalis, a giant wheeled crate that unfolded into a cabinet of curiosities, a masterclass in extreme metal sculpture and sound.
