Recycling older photos cause I’ve been working indoors too much to shoot. Still can’t get over the serendipity of this one from 2019

“Puppy” is easily the best-looking film @uekproductions has ever produced, and we owe all of that to the tireless efforts of @justingaar

A talented photographer and DP, Justin joined the project only weeks before shooting was scheduled to begin and it immediately became clear that we should have asked him to join us sooner. Not only did he make quick work of understanding the script, he created a shot list, drew storyboards, built a detailed lighting plan, and arrived in Seattle completely prepared the day before load-in. He never flinched or backed down when @notsoboo Mike Chilson mentioned some cockamamie scheme for a shot, and with good reason…

You see, way back in the early 90s Justin and Mike lived a few blocks from each other in Birmingham, AL and would spend weekends and afternoons after school making movies together, many of which were just elaborate schemes to set things on fire. They went to separate colleges studying different aspects of film and video production and made it their careers, but “Puppy” became an unexpected reunion for the two, as well as another of friend from the Alabama days, Executive Producer @shawntsullivan

Check out @justingaar ‘s work on his Instagram page, and keep checking here for information on how to see his impressive camera work in “Puppy”!

I just came across these photos I’d forgotten. They’re from a trip back to Kentucky for my paternal grandfather’s funeral nearly a decade ago. I’ve always taken photos but did’t really know what I was doing with it or that it could be anything more than just a way to document. These are all from my grandfather and great aunt’s homes. I had a canon 7D mostly for video and nearly every photo I took with it is lost to the shuffle of hard drives and impermanence of digital archives.

An interesting coincidence happened yesterday. I was driving out to Camarillo through the lush green hills, heading to my first job of the year and feeling a profound sadness for having left Brazil and family just days before. Once the record that I had played finished, random songs started playing.

A few tracks in, a song came on with a somber tone with the lyrics in Portuguese, “let’s go out, eat pastel, since you live next to Juveve”. I couldn’t believe it. These lyrics were very - extremely - specific to my exact longing. I immediately looked to see who this band could be. It’s a band named Jovem Dionísio (young Dionysus).

The coincidence is, my in-laws live in Juveve. They live less than a block from the pasteleira referenced in the song. Juveve isn’t some super notable place, to my knowledge, in Brazilian lore. The band’s name also stuck out immediately to me because it couldn’t be coincidence that a few weeks ago, I worked up the courage to walk into an old school classic Brazilian street bar two doors down from the pasteleira to order a drink and chat with the professional drinkers that are there every night. No one spoke English. It was intimidating but a very empowering test of the language skills I’ve been working on for years now. It became a landmark for me in my own story. The bar is named Bar do Dionísio. As it turns out, this is where the band met to play pool and their other big hit song is an ode to the owner.

So, here I am reminiscing on my hour and a half long drive through the rolling hills of Ventura County, California about this very specific small place in a massive country, rolling through memories and imagery in my mind… on comes this song. It’s a little bitty world and all the people in it are connected to one another.

Here are some little moments I liked from those memories, including a photo of that pasteleira and that specific bar.

An interesting coincidence happened yesterday. I was driving out to Camarillo through the lush green hills, heading to my first job of the year and feeling a profound sadness for having left Brazil and family just days before. Once the record that I had played finished, random songs started playing.

I don’t know what happened, but I can see photos again. Really just couldn’t see them for so long. Became unmotivated for a looong time because of it. Then on a night walk a week ago, something clicked and I see them again. Can even anticipate them again, see them coming. I was so desperate this year, I designed a whole photo shoot to create some images cause I couldn’t see them in the wild anymore. Image creators block or something. Anyone go through a rut like that?
