Heading to Cannes Film Festival for our third year with Unifrance @myfrenchstories, and 🇫🇷on a hâte (we can’t wait) to watch some incredible films.
Here are 5 French films competing for la Palme d’Or this year that we think could actually win. From a psychological thriller featuring some of the biggest names in le cinéma français, to a body-swap premise that’s one of the most surprising entries in the whole lineup... this year’s selection is intense.
🎬 Our picks:
1️⃣ Histoires parallèles / Parallel Tales — dir. Asghar Farhadi
2️⃣ Garance / Another Day — dir. Jeanne Herry
3️⃣ Histoires de la nuit / The Birthday Party — dir. Léa Mysius
4️⃣ La Vie d’une femme / A Woman’s Life — dir. Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet
5️⃣ L’inconnue / The Unknown — dir. Arthur Harari (who co-wrote Anatomy of a Fall with Justine Triet — Oscar winner for Best Screenplay)

🇫🇷French transcript of the video: ⬇️
Paris, New York.
On y court, on y tombe, on y renaît.
Le vieux adage résonne encore : *time is money.*
Chacun essaie. Chacun lutte. Chacun rêve.
Paris m’a vu grandir. New York m’a vu mûrir.
New York, I love you.

2 French films that genuinely moved me at the Cannes Film Festival this weekend. 🥹🎬🇫🇷
Watching French films is one of the most powerful ways to immerse yourself in the language and the culture. If you want French cinema and TV recommendations, check out @myfrenchstories. We are here at Cannes together and they are the best resource for this.
1. Gentle Monster (dir. Marie Kreutzer) starring Léa Seydoux, Laurence Rupp, Jella Haase and Catherine Deneuve. A psychological drama about a woman who discovers the unthinkable about her husband. Visceral, complex, and Léa Seydoux is extraordinary in it.
2. Les Matins Merveilleux / Marvelous Mornings, the debut feature from Avril Besson, starring India Hair, Raya Martigny, and Éric Cantona. A drama about grief and reinvention, handled with tenderness and humor.
Both films sit with the most complex parts of being human. Our shadows. The things we find unacceptable, in others and in ourselves. And yet, those are exactly the things that make us 🇫🇷humain.
Cinema like this makes me more understanding, more empathetic. It teaches me to observe without judgment.
I watch films to be moved, to question myself and the world, to see life on screen. A life that may not be mine or one that mirrors something deep inside me. That is what great cinema does.
🇫🇷C’est émouvant, touchant = It’s moving / touching
Je suis ému(e) / touché(e) = I am moved / touched

“Making a film is improving life.” Drop a ❤️if you agree.
François Truffaut was one of the defining voices of the French New Wave / 🇫🇷La nouvelle vague, a filmmaker who believed cinema wasn’t separate from living, it was part of it. We’re right in the middle of the Cannes Film Festival, here for the third year in a row with @myfrenchstories, and something about being this immersed in it, the screenings, the conversations with directors about why they made what they made, the sheer number of French films in the festival this year, makes that sentence feel less like a quote and more like something we’re living. We’ve laughed, cried, and sat in silence at the end of films. We’ve listened to directors talk not about technical choices but about what they needed to say and why only cinema could say it.
🎬Here are some of the French films we saw so far:
- Les Matins Merveilleux directed by @avrilbespi with @india.hair, @rayamartigny and @ericcantano
- Gentle Monster directed by @mariekreutzer with Lea Seydoux
- Full Phil by @mroizo with Kristen Stewart, @woodyharrelson, @lebonlebon and Emma McCay
- Si tu penses bien directed by @geraldinenakach
- Fatherland directed by Pawel Pawlikowski with Sandra Hüller
What’s the last film that moved you?

🇫🇷Mer/sea, ☀️soleil/sun, 🎬cinéma, and a lunch that lasted three hours because no one wanted it to end.
We spent the day at La Plage, the @airfrance pop-up right next to Hôtel Martinez. The space this year is built around la Concorde (celebrating 50 years since its first commercial flight) and La Première, with every detail tied to French gastronomy, design, and cinema.
A private restaurant for about thirty guests, an outdoor lounge, a bar, and sun loungers facing the sea. A rare pocket of calm in the middle of Cannes at its most alive.
The savory menu was created by chef Mory Sacko, the desserts by Claire Heitzler. The caviar and champagne tasting gives you a sense of what the La Première dining experience actually feels like.
Air France has been a partner of the Cannes Film Festival for 46 years. Cannes in May is hard to beat, but worth visiting any time of year.
In Cannes right now? La Plage Air France is open through May 23, 10am to 6pm. Reservation required.

🇫🇷French is full of little phrases that say one thing and mean something else entirely. In our Intermediate Conversation class starting this weekend, you’ll learn how to read between the lines, respond naturally, and finally understand the subtext. Enroll via the link in bio (or comment “French class”)
“C’est pas mal” does not really mean “it’s not bad.”
In French, it means “it’s pretty good.” Sometimes even “I’m impressed.”
This is a classic example of 🇫🇷litotes, a figure of speech where you express something positive by understating it. French uses it constantly. English does too, but French leans into it more.
And like most things in languages, context + intonation do a lot of the work. “C’est pas mal” said flatly is one thing. Add a little “ah ouais...” before it and the meaning shifts completely.
French people are not being lukewarm. They’re just being French 🫠

Bordeaux Edition: 🇫🇷🍷10 French wine words you actually need to know.
Pagodes de Cos 2021 by @cosdestournel changed my mind about Bordeaux wines so I had to share this precious find with you. It’s a wine from Château Cos d’Estournel, a Second Growth from the Saint-Estèphe appellation. The 2021 vintage is a blend dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruity, fresh and approachable, with notes of blueberry, redcurrant and strawberry.
You can try it for yourself via the Millesima store in NYC or online at @millesimausa. I highly recommend grabbing a bottle! AD #partner 21+ Drink responsibly
