Legend & caretaker of Bay Area music culture @platurn returns to the Village booth with Soul On Ice, exclusively featuring music from the place we call home, with a focus on jazz for this inaugural edition.

Did you know George Duke, Vince Guaraldi, and Cal Tjader all have origins in the Bay? And that doesn’t even scratch the surface. Come listen to this celebration of a musical region like no other, that has always punched above its weight.

@platurn recounts winning the Scion mix battle with @djspair , which eventually led to going on tour with DJ Premier and getting hazed by his crew 😅.

Pretty sure I posted this many years ago but just pulled it out of a storage box and feels like it needs a re-share. Easily one of the more unique promo items in the collection (the stash pocket for all your naughty needs 😆) & def not something you come across too often. Wild Pitch was & is one of my all time favorite labels in the history of the rap genre -- for the life of me I can't remember where I got this from but it's def been in my possession since the Fakin' The Funk promos first dropped (I do recall getting them both around the same time) . Dig it.

Putting this up here as one of my favorite rap records of all time -- for those that know, yeah well if you were there when this was everywhere then you understand just how impactful this tape was...for those that weren't, look this joint up & analyze, enjoy, and take this album in. And if you dive deep enough, you'll understand just how sonically masterful this LP is, from the production (mastering & mixing of the samples) to creativity to lyrical skill & storytelling to sheer originality -- this album really has it all and stands apart from so much that was out at the time. “Through Storm & Grief was inspired by my roots more than anything… A nod to my upbringing and all that’s unfolded through adulthood. This is the music that means more to me than most. The funk intact, the drums & bass abound, but that melody has to take you somewhere. Somewhere meaningful and inspiring. Positive or melancholy, it doesn’t matter as long as it grabs a hold. My aim was to bring it back to that golden age albeit with a current twist. With the aid of some incredible friends, I think it came together in just such a manner..”
