Parking During Roadwork

Please plan a little extra time to park and get to The WECC for the next while. The City of Winnipeg is adding a bicycle lane to Sherbrooke Ave. (Yay!). The downside is that Sherbrooke will not be available for parking during this roadwork, which is scheduled to last from now until the fall, exact end date TBD. Ellice, Furby, Maryland and other side streets remain good parking options.

If you want someone to walk you safely to your car after a performance, ask one of our volunteers, and we will arrange an escorted walk.

See you soon!

Wednesday, July 8th at the West End Cultural Centre— crys cole and Oren Ambarchi return to Winnipeg, fresh off the 2026 release of ‘Sparkling or Silent,’ a detailed, richly associative electroacoustic collaboration on the Portraits GRM label. Do not miss these rare prairie solo sets by two of the closest listeners in music, with a performance from Hazel Fog. Advance tickets are on sale now.

crys cole is a Canadian sound artist working in composition, performance, sculpture and installation. Generating subtle and imperfect sounds through haptic gestures and seemingly mundane materials, she creates textural works that continuously retune the ear.

Oren Ambarchi is a composer and multi-instrumentalist with longstanding interests in transcending conventional instrumental approaches. His work focuses mainly on the exploration of the guitar, “re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it’s no longer easily identifiable as itself. Instead, it’s a laboratory for extended sonic investigation”. (The Wire, UK).

Hazel Fog envelops the listener in analogue textures and warbling drone, weaving allusive field recordings into sheets of magnetic abstraction.

Valerie Lacombe w/ @willbonness@niallcademusic@julianbradford
Friday May 22nd
Centre Culturel Franco Manitobain (moved from The WECC to CCFM), 340 Provencher, 2nd floor where Mardi Jazz is held
Doors 7pm Music 8pm

Valerie Lacombe’s State of Garden and Shadow :
Album Launch Canada Tour
“State of Garden and Shadow”, a quote taken from the Clarice
Lispector novel “Água Viva”, evokes a world rich in symbols and emotions. The garden is a place that embodies life, growth, transformation, a symbol of beauty and fulfillment. It is also a placeof work and care, of patience and dedication.
This process of cultivation and growth is metaphorical in the case of this project, symbolizing personal development, creativity, and artistic evolution, as it represents a new milestone in Lacombe’s career and holds special significance, showcasing original compositions, the result of her artistic growth during her master’s studies at McGill University under the attentive guidance of Kevin Dean and Darrell Green. The work focuses on music for a jazz quartet of two horns, bass and drums. This format offers a lot of creative freedom for spontaneous interaction between the members of the ensemble due to the absence of a chordal instrument such as a piano or guitar.
Throughout the music’s history, there have been various different approaches to the chord-less quartet, from Gerry Mulligan and Chet Baker, to Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry and more. The particular approach associated most with Elvin Jones, which Lacombe has been heavily inspired by during the compositional process, consists of a strong swing feeling and melodic freedom in the drums, along with harmonically dense and assertive saxophone playing.

🌱Fresh off their residency at the Banff Centre, performers @princessdasha.fm , @x_and_ra , @andresfelipejimenez + Justine Erickson will be bringing The Commensality Project to @thewecc on May 29.

Who cared for you through food, and what did they make for you? My dad cared for me through food for 42 years until his stroke reversed the roles. This contemporary dance + live music performance embodies the universal themes of family, food, memories, and connection.

Commensality is the social practice of sharing meals. I was commissioned by Buhler Gallery (@galeriebuhlergallery ) to create a dance inside the St. Boniface Hospital kitchen. The work travelled to the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity where my dance company satiated their creative minds on the incredible buffet. Sitting in each other’s presence, sharing conversation about our lives, our practices, and our dreams, the work deepened.

Dance, theatre, and music lovers will crave this immersive experience, starring Dasha Plett, Justine Erickson, Andrés Jiménez Mejía, and Alex Elliott.

50/50 Raffle
Tickets on sale until May 25th
Online sales only.
Find the link in our IG bio or in the "news" section of The WECC site.

Thank you for your kind support of the Tune In Program! It really makes a difference in the lives of neighbourhood youth.

The Tune In Program offers free music instruction on the guitar, bass, drums, voice, and songwriting for youth. Professional musicians provide two hours of instruction and mentorship once a week (Tuesday, 4-6pm). This beloved program is presented in partnership with Music Equals through the Manitoba Conservatory of Music & Arts. Funds raised through the 50/50 raffle will go towards expenses like instrument repair, and consumables like strings, reeds, rosin, and the like.

“The Tune In Program has allowed me to expose neighbourhood kids to music! They have instruments we don’t have access to. Attending this program means kids have gotten to learn more about music than we could any other way. It is consistent, every Tuesday. We can really count on it. It has become important to us!” - Jackie Loewen, neighbourhood resident

“I really like Tune In. It gives me something I don’t have: a drum set. I really like Tune In. It also helps other kids. It makes me happy that WECC is introducing new things to kids.” - Participating Youth

“The WECC Tune In Program has been an incredible opportunity for so many of my students. It has provided access to a variety of instruments and music lessons - experiences that were not available to many of them otherwise. Students come to school the next day excited! They want to share what they’ve learned, whether it is trying something new or exploring something they’re passionate about. We’re very fortunate to have such a valuable program available in our community.” - Keri McPhillips, music teacher at a nearby school

The Raffle ends May 25th, online sales only. A winner will be drawn (online, by a smart, fair robot) on May 27th.
