A little bank holiday surprise for you 🫢

We're bringing The Common Press to Dalston!!! 97 Stoke Newington Road, London, N16 8BX to be precise. This will be a queer bookshop, café, bar, and community hub - Black queer and trans run, like our other site! 🔥💜🫶🏾🏳️‍⚧️

Since losing Common Counter bar in 2023, we've been dreaming of finding a venue like this, and we can't wait for you to see what we've done with the place 🥹

Drop by this weekend to say hello as we get the books on the shelves! We will be open 11am-5pm all weekend. Our soft opening times for now are Wednesday-Sunday 11am-5pm ❤️‍🔥📚✨

The Common Press venue in Shoreditch will still be open as usual.

Lots more info to come, but for now, enjoy our soft launch (and f*ck the EHRC)!

💜💜💜💜

🏳️‍⚧️ We stand with all authors withdrawing from the Polari Prize.

🏳️‍⚧️ In response to a proud TERF being included on the longlist for this year's Polari Prize, over half of the nominated authors have removed themselves from consideration, and two of the judges - including the fabulous Nicola Dinan - have stepped down.

🏳️‍⚧️ We find Polari's public statement(s) to be disgraceful. To choose to, and to double down on, the decision to platform an outspoken self-identified TERF with a wildly harmful history of depicting trans people, CSA survivors and historical events in this current political climate is a certified CHOICE.

🏳️‍⚧️ Asserting the right of longlistees to "hold radically different positions on substantive issues" - ie, the right to be transphobic - is dehumanising and transphobic in itself. By doubling down, Polari has failed the trans community and wider queer literary community in its handling of the issue.

🏳️‍⚧️ In solidarity with the incredible authors who have dropped out of the Polari Prize, we'll be offering 15% off on all their books until the end of September.

🏳️‍⚧️ Trans lives are not a debate.

You can buy the titles on slide 6 in store and online at the top of our Linktree in bio 🔗

Come to our event THIS SATURDAY
where we will be discussing conflict, repair and rupture within Black/POC Trans & Queer communities! WHILE mending our clothes torn and in need of love.
We are in dialogue amongst ourselves, our elders and our children! We believe in creating new ways of navigating harm without reinventing the wheel. There are wells deep with knowledge across ages and we honour that.
Our elders are welcome and uplifted in our spaces!
The need to discuss how we navigate conflict is high in these times. Lets exchange knowledge with the medium of sewing <3
Tickets are in our bio!🎟️

We're so excited for our Pride with Moomin event on Saturday 6th June, taking place at our new Dalston venue in collaboration with @moominuk @moominofficial 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Tickets are selling fast, so make sure you book in our bio! Daytime is free (just RSVP), evening film tickets are limited. Books, café and bar are open all day 💜

Visitors of all ages and families are invited into a warm and inclusive programme inspired by the world of the Moomin. The daytime (from 1-5pm) will feature a Moomin storytime session for families and attendees with @lizfoststoryteller , bringing the beloved characters and their gentle, imaginative universe to life through performance and reading. Alongside this, @dr_ronx will lead their How to Save a Life workshop, which equips participants with practical emergency response and life-saving skills. The daytime celebration will end with singing and readings by performance artist @itsgigizahir .

In the evening, the event shifts into a biopic film screening (from 6-8:45 pm) of the extraordinary life of Finnish writer Tove Jansson, the visionary creator of the Moomin. The screening will be followed by a discussion featuring @benpechey and @paul_gravett , offering insight into Jansson’s artistic legacy, queer cultural significance, and her enduring influence on literature, illustration, and contemporary storytelling.

Following the landmark collaboration on the very first Moomin Pride celebration in 2024, this year marks the continuation of an annual tradition celebrating storytelling, imagination, queerness, and community, now taking place at The Common Press's new bookshop venue in Dalston.

Our friends at @thecommonpress are opening a new spot in Dalston and we couldn’t be more excited for them ⭐️

Since losing their Common Counter Bar in 2023, the hunt has been on to find a new spot for another space to continue their amazing work for the LGBTQ community in Hackney, and we’re pleased to say they’ve found it!

Open Wed - Sun 11am-5pm, we can’t wait to see the new space and snap up a few new books to celebrate too📚☕️

The Common Press venue in Shoreditch will be open as usual 😍🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

New books to devour (a very varied selection for you today) 🩵📖📚

Rich Text — the Inaugural Issue by @studioonstrike and @em1webmaster , featuring @benk_eeek @elida.silvey @em1webmaster Cody Caetano @cody_caetano @francis_w_c @oluoluoxenfree @willemworld @fiona_____glen @garbagecutie @zakiyyahdeen @bimboscholar . Gorgeously printed, Rich Text maps a lineage from printing presses and the typographers’ unions that fought automation to today’s slick WYSIWYG software and AI‑generated prose and reveals rich text formatting as a site of resistance where users wield boldface, italics, links, and raw code to reclaim autonomy 🔥

The Rainbow Ain’t Never Been Enuf: On the Myth of LGBTQ+ Solidarity by @doctressstory , published by @beaconpress - the perfect read ahead of Pride month! Your favorite Black queer studies professor Kaila Adia Story says the rainbow ain’t never been enough in this introduction to the current state of queer intersectionality, or lack thereof. Story argues that to be queer is to be political, and the carefully glittered façade of solidarity in the pride movement veils dangerous neoliberal ideals of apolitical queer embodiment ✊🏾

An Queer Scrapbook: Britain and Ireland since 1945 by @justinbengry Matt Cook @rebeccajennings17 @ejmuseumoftransology , published by @manchester_university_press . A beautifully illustrated compendium of LGBTIQ+ life, A Queer Scrapbook offers a rich archive of histories from across Britain and Ireland. Brimming with interviews, newspaper clippings, photographs, and flyers, it traces urban, rural, and regional queer experiences from 1945 to the present 🏳️‍🌈

John of John by Douglas Stuart, published by @picadorbooks . The third novel from the Booker winning novelist behind Shuggie Bain, sees Douglas Stuart return with another work exploring the heartbreaking story of a young man’s return home to the Isle of Harris and how the bonds of family life are torn by the weight of expectation ⛰️
