I’m Iona Catherine, a record producer and studio engineer working out of Hackney Road Studios.

I’m introducing a new wing to the Record Producer Program which will cover all things essential to music production, recording and mixing. So that anyone who is a wannabe producer or self producing artist can start to make music that sounds like it does in their head.

We’re covering all the technical skills as well as concepts of creativity and idea generation. So that whatever is in your head you can start to get down onto the digital page.

Mini lesson! Introducing the basics of dynamic, condenser, and ribbon microphones.

In short:
dynamic = bite/less detailed, can handle loud sounds
condenser = depth/more detailed, more sensitive to loud sounds
ribbon = smooth/darker, can’t handle loud sounds

In reality you could use any of these types of mic on any sound source depending on the character you want to the recording to have.

All three types would sound great on vocals, for example, but give a slightly different effect, depending on the record you’re making. Maybe you’d put a dynamic for an indie rock track, a ribbon for a jazz track, or a condenser for a pop track.

Sometimes you may also mix and match the mics. If you were mic’ing a full drum kit which typically has many different drums all in one, you may use a blend of all three of these types of microphone to capture different aspects of the performance.

You may put dynamic microphones closest to the very loudest sources like the toms and the kick drum, and ribbon or condenser microphones further away overhead to catch the sizzle of the cymbals.

There’s so much to know about microphone choices and placements, but hopefully this short intro helps get you started thinking about what and why you might use certain mics in different circumstances 😊

A unique sonic identity can be a powerful tool as a music producer, but figuring out what makes your work different can be tricky at the start. By leaning into the unknown and starting to make lots of work you’ll start to see patterns in what you’re drawn to and be able explore those elements more deeply in your work - both for yourself and others’ records.

You can make full length productions, but actually when I was starting out I found a lot of value in committing to making small ideas regularly (for me it was spending 5 minutes minimum daily!) and then fleshing out the ones that I really loved.

Many of my students have found this to be a helpful approach because it exercises both creative development and technical skills.

We explore this sort of practise on the Record Producer Program Fundamentals Course, going in depth around creative identity, idea generation, and ultimately how to take a song from start to finish in a way that sounds like you.
