⚫️
Shamba la Mawe means “Garden of Stones” in Swahili and is a local name for Nairobi. It speaks to the city’s raw spirit: gritty, unfiltered, full of life. Together with local creative @kennedymirema , we created a visual essay on Nairobi’s creative underground, capturing the city’s essence through its people and communities. A dream commission made possible by @klm and @photovogue .
Special thanks to @alessiaglaviano @kayseellis @kennedymirema and above all the beautiful people of Nairobi who stood before my lens and shared their stories.

In early May, I flew to Turin for @volkskrantmagazine to photograph @martijndoolaard, a fellow Dutchie I’ve been following ever since he cycled around the world. These days, he’s restoring two stone cabins in the Italian Alps and documenting the process in beautifully serene, ASMR-style videos on his YouTube channel.
Visiting a place in person where I’d already spent dozens of hours virtually was a surreal experience. For those wondering: yes, I’ve had the legendary percolator coffee. Yes, the ride up there is rocky and beautiful. And most importantly, yes, the view is even more breathtaking in real life.
Big thanks to @martijndoolaard for opening his doors and sharing his hospitality, to @heike.gulker for the opportunity and our long awaited first collaboration, and last but not least to @pieterhotsesmit for putting everything into words in a way that holds the magic, yet embraces reality.

Mziyanda during our biannual shoot in Table View. As we began, the weather quickly turned into a grey, rainy mess. We decided it was better to wait it out till twilight, and use the light of passing cars and street lanterns. Nothing beats those 1s+ exposures. 💛 @queenlohaanda
