We’ve written a thousand songs together but Balance is the first time we got in a room to collaborate in 5 years. It was so easy getting to the bottom of the song with him. We have a short hand and an unspoken knowing. Now medicated and sober and sitting together we remembered what we had and this song fell out quick. I’m so insanely proud of how it feels to be healthy and trying to mend fences rather than hiding in my drunk self hating bridge burning hipster bullshit. I was working the self checkout and I knew it was my shot but all I managed to say was “excited for the show tonight, lads!” . i used ‘lads’ so they could relax and feel at home. A little trick in the industry called a code switch! They were kind enough but that was the end of the conversation. No matter how I dreamed, I just wasn’t one of the sons. I went to their concert several hours later. It was a perfect show. The room was tingling. That was the last time me and the sons were ever in the same room. But now 16 years later we can try that Whole Foods meet up one more time. Me and my lads; Marcus and his sons. Together at last.
