Malin, the giant troll sculpture by Danish artist Thomas Dambo that became one of Pease Park’s best-known public art installations, was destroyed in a fire early Thursday morning in Austin. The 18-foot-tall sculpture, unveiled in 2024 as Dambo’s first troll in Texas, was built from recycled wood and other reclaimed materials.

Rust-colored stains streaking the exterior of Austin’s Waterline tower drew widespread attention online as the skyscraper nears completion downtown. Developers said the discoloration came from testing the building’s standpipe fire protection system, which washed construction grime down parts of the facade.
