Chasing Tokyo wins gold 🥇 (!!) proud of this documentary being honoured at this year’s @tellyawards 🎉

This frame is one of my favourite scenes from the film, featuring first-time Olympian @mcintyreeilidh just months before taking gold herself at the Tokyo @olympics. Probs a bit more graft in that although I did look like this at one point on the editing room floor 🫠

Working with @ana.projects opened up such an exciting dialogue between the environment of the speedway circuit and the recorded image. We were able to introduce physical elements of what we felt when we were there on the ground, shooting at the location.

Scratches, rips and tears were added to short action sequences, as if they were the result of gravel or dirt from the race track colliding with the visuals. Even the metal safety barriers we had to shoot through became an opportunity for texture and transitions.

Also, because we were dealing with high-gloss stills pulled from 16mm footage, they appeared to move and jump as the scans were put together. It felt ghostly, a surprisingly perfect representation of a sport far from the mainstream.

BROADSIDE

I wanted to capture the sport of speedway in a way that felt raw and powerful.

A visual collision of metal and dirt. Shot across two different 16mm film stocks and combined with hand-crafted animation, this short film was about grit.

Sound is a massive part of the sporting experience, with several roaring engines hurtling around a small circuit in as little as 60 seconds.

These bikes have no brakes. It was important to me to humanise the fearless riders at @ipswichwitches and their contributions were invaluable.

A brief moment with Jason, world champ riding for the Ipswich Witches Speedway Club.

Speedway is watched by a relatively small, diehard collective of fans throughout a handful of stadiums across the country. Riders like Jason push their machines to the limits of speed as they drift (aka broadsiding) around an oval track in just 60 seconds with bikes that have no brakes.

Excited to share BROADSIDE 🔜 my short film about this unique sport.
