Flying in for Valentine’s Day are the Orange Spotted Sun-Moths. Like the demarcations on their wings, these loving species fly in swooping zig-zag patterns, following and chasing each other in a never-ending dance. 🌞 💕

Hello everybody! I’m J. C. Fontanive, I invented the Flipbook Machine in 2004 while studying for a masters degree in animation. I’m a visual artist and this is my studio in Queens, New York. My assistant Alex and I make every machine here by hand -- cutting sheet metal, bending, welding, and animating. I hope you enjoy the posts, let me know if you have any questions or suggestions.

A bird’s eye view of Flipbook Machine assembly (at 10x speed!)

The Purple-Throated Euphonia is a song bird species found on the grounds of the US Embassy in Paraguay. Commissioned by the Art in Embassies U.S. Department of State program, these paintings and animation are made by the brother and sister J.C. and Sheila Fontanive.
