Taking 3rd Place at the Young Horticulturist of the Year Grand Final, was @frank_cooke07

Frank is currently studying at The @rbgedinburgh and has a strong interest in plant diversity, ecology, and evolutionary biology in tropical regions. His passion for plants began at a young age, growing fruit and vegetables at home, and quickly developed into an interest in unusual species such as carnivorous plants and carrion-mimicking succulents.

I want to send huge thanks to Sandra Austin and @paulfitters who retired from their Young Horticulturist of the Year Ireland Regional Organiser roles this year. Sandra and Paul have a combined total of over 30 years with the competition, they have shown a true dedication to the promotion of young horticulturists and helped make the competition what it is today in Ireland
We welcome @sarahsimpsn and @caithrionamccrudden who will be taking up these roles, we look forward to having you on board!

Help us to showcase the exciting and varied career opportunities in horticulture: Grow Careers Reel Competition

From Grower to Gardener, Designers, Garden Writers, Landscapers, Scientists, Retailers, Propagators, Agronomists, Horticultural Therapists, Educators, Influencers and everyone else we want you to spotlight your role and why it is important.

We are hosting a short-form video competition, where horticulturists can create and submit up to a 60-second Reel that explains what their role entails. There’s a chance to win a £500 cash prize for the best Reel.

Visited @dobbiesgardencentres today and was delighted to find a mature specimen of Ceanothus ‘Zanzibar’ (aka ‘Pershore Zanzibar’) in the ornamental area between the shrubs A-Z and garden sheds. https://www.rhs.org.uk/plants/117949/ceanothus-pershore-zanzibar-pbr-(v)/details

We discovered Zanzibar in the early 1990’s growing in the grounds at @percollegewcg Pershore College of Horticulture
while I was the Nursery Manager. It was a variegated sport on Ceanothus ‘A T Johnson’. We successfully rooted an initial 3 cuttings in our Specialist Plant Unit, bulked up the plant, I applied/gained Plant Breeders Rights (PBR) to protect it, we featured it in a Gold Medal winning garden at @the_rhs Malvern Spring Show, signed a commercial deal with @farplants Nursery, and ran a naming competition in @gardenanswers magazine.

The lady who choose the name Zanzibar said it reminded her of her honeymoon, “with the blue sea, yellow sand and green palm trees of Zanzibar”(!). Farplants grew 1000s of the plant, and launched it as their main plant promotion in c.1996. They distributed it across the UK and Pershore received significant plant royalty payments for many years (maybe still do today if they have renewed PBR!?).

I often see Zanzibar for sale in garden centres and growing in gardens (there are a few I know in Edinburgh), but I have never seen such an excellent specimen as there is in full flower right now at Dobbies. It’s a cracker. I’d have bought one, but ironically they have none for sale!
