About four years ago, my wife and I found ourselves living in the small town of Brigham City, UT, while she worked on her veterinary medicine degree in Logan, UT. Immediately, I was struck by the strangeness of this place: somewhat stuck in time, in a cycle set by its own self-influence.
I began to document, and as time went on I realized the ways in which I wanted to shine a light on the residents and hidden corners of this place that was slowly becoming my home.
Throughout my time making photographs, I kept the term sonder in the back of my mind, perpetually reminding myself that every light in every home is a life as full and rich as my own.
Brigham City, from the outside, may just be a stop for gas on I-15—a quick thought of who lives here and why—but my project, entitled A Corner House Under Turning Headlights, seeks to explore and examine what is generally overlooked. This summer I had the honor of conducting an interview for The Snowboarder’s Journal ( @thesnowboardersjournal ) of the one, the only Ylfa Rúnarsdóttir ( @ylfarunars ).

It appears in Issue 23.1 where Ylfa bagged a cover and a 16 page feature including this first photo I shot of her gracefully floating through the Brighton backcountry. I also wrote the intro for this piece and you can read it below.

“I’m lapping Woodward Park City, UT, with Ylfa Rúnarsdóttir on a sunny spring day. She’s in town for The Uninvited Invitational, the all-women’s event named after the video series that catapulted her into snowboarding’s spotlight. “I’ll come cheer you on in qualifiers tomorrow,” I offer. “Hmm, maybe not,” she replies with a grin.

It’s not that Ylfa can’t hold her own. But her true impact lies beyond the contest scene: in standout video parts in The Uninvited II, Hot Coco and Bloom, and on magazine covers where her trick and spot selection shine through.

By the fifth chairlift ride, I’ve watched her eat five Fruit Roll-Ups. She’s a candy freak—though if she had her way, she’d be munching on salty Icelandic sweets, the kind she and her brother grew up eating at home in Reykjavík. Naturally, she shared a piece with me—the part with the tongue tattoo.

Ylfa is like your best friend from middle school: high energy, a little devious, with an open mind toward this vast world she has now crossed many times over. She feeds off your energy, and you feed off hers. But beneath the mischief and rambunctious outpourings, there lies a quiet and thoughtful center. In prolonged conversations, you realize the intellectual capacity this energizer bunny has, constantly interpreting and analyzing the world around her to better understand her place in it and help you find yours. She’s as true a friend as you can ask for, and she always gives me a healthy dose of the inner child that should never leave us.”

Yesterday the newest issue of The Snowboarder’s Journal ( @thesnowboardersjournal ) arrived in the mail featuring an article I wrote and shot photos for entitled “A Weekend At Bode’s”. Then, in serendipitous fashion, Bode Merrill’s ( @bodemerrill ) newest film “When Doves Cry” dropped online.

Here’s a collection of photographs I took while visiting The Space Station/Mellowstone Club ( @thespacestation.wy ) ( @themellowstoneclub ) over last New Years with an all star cast featured in “When Doves Cry”. Many of the photographs appear in “A Weekend At Bode’s”.

Thank you Bode for having me out to document the action. Your film blew me away. Really nice to see a concept driven piece that delivered on the story telling and obviously the riding and filming is top tier. Congratulations Bode, Jack ( @jackrcoyne ) and Shane ( @shanecharlebois ) and everyone else who helped in the making of the film. Y’all crushed it.

After a long day of shooting with a big crew in one of our favorite and most generous zones around Brighton ( @brightonresort ), we took a little time to make some glory turns in perfect snow while the remaining light turned golden.

This was shot during the height of the pandemic. I work as a bartender so I was among the first to be laid off. With endless free time and government money, I spent my days walking or riding my bike around the empty streets of Salt Lake City, UT making photographs. This was one of those mornings.
