SÍM Residency
The SÍM Residency is an international artist-in-residence program for multidisciplinary artists, and cultural practitioners in Reykjavik, Iceland.

SÍM Residency artist-in-residence
Tanja Valta (she/her) Finland
@bloomsandclay @tanjavalta
Residency period: May 2026
Residency granted by Vantaa Art Association @vantaantaiteilijaseura
Tanja Valta is a textile designer, multidisciplinary artist, art educator and gardener. Influenced by ikebana, she extends textile thinking into three-dimensional plant-based forms. Her practice sits between process-based and site-specific art and grows from a close, tactile relationship with materials.
Valta works mainly with locally gathered natural elements fallen branches, driftwood, meadow plants and responsibly collected invasive species alongside recycled and found objects. Material is an active partner. Its shape, texture and transformation over time guide the making. Her method is rooted in sensory attention, embodied making and reflection.
Her pieces emphasize line, rhythm, contrast and empty space, are often made in situ and are characterized by temporality; many materials can be returned to the landscape. Valta aims to awaken sensory awareness, shared aesthetic attention and a renewed, embodied connection to everyday nature showing that close looking reveals everyday joy and beauty.

Rachelle Hamilton is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montréal, Canada. Her work explores ideas of the self, transformation, and the joy of everyday life.
Much of her work focuses on ordinary things: food, nature, books, photography, and fibre art. Often switching between mediums, guided by curiosity and a desire to find the most effective or exciting way to bring an idea to life.
Her work has recently begun to explore the body as a site of transformation and vulnerability, and the parallels between physical isolation and the solitude often found in nature.

@rebeccakrasnik
Residency period: May 2026
Residency supported by Nordic Analog Network – @nordicanalognetwork in collaboration with Ljósmyndaskólinn @ljosmyndaskolinn.is
Rebecca Krasnik works between analogue photography, old printmaking techniques, and computer-generated imagery. She places her images in artists books, sculptural installations, and augmented reality (AR), contrasting a bodily experience with digital representations of time and space. Her work unfolds as investigations of how new technology continues to change the way we create and interact with images today.

Residency period: May 2026
Nicolette is a dance artist from Buenos Aires, based in Berlin. With a background in Nutrition studies, her work explores the intersections of sound and movement. She investigates gestures of resistance in human and non-human bodies, using field recording to amplify the unheard sounds of nature and the human form. Bridging the audible and the silenced through deep listening and movement, during the last years her practice incorporates sonic experimentation to bridge the gap between the tangible and the invisible, unearthing structures of resilience across social and natural landscapes.

Still building, already feeling it. Tomorrow is opening day. ✦ Art / Earth — Jöklaminni arrives at @bacartlab in Leuven. A work-in-progress exhibition emerging from exchange between artists and scientists in Iceland, Belgium and The Netherlands.
Belgian artists spent a month in residence at @sim_residency in Reykjavík, walking glaciers and working alongside glaciologists. Icelandic artists came to @c.takt in Pelt, tracing a.o. the Dommel and, guided by Nick Steur/@soap_maastricht, the Maas. Scientific field data from the expeditions in Iceland contribute to ICELINK, a European research project on polar ice. Throughout, researchers from @jongeacademie were part of the conversation. The works on view are not conclusions — they are living traces of an ongoing dialogue between art and science.
Opening tonight, Thursday 7 May · 5 pm · free
Exhibition until 23 May · Thu–Sat · 1–6 pm
→ More info: link in bio
On 13 May: public event with @jongeacademie — work presentations by artists & panel discussion with some of the artists & scientists connected to Jonge Academie, moderated by science journalist Ilse Boeren (@eoswetenschap).

@janiseyntema
Residency period: May 2026
Janise Yntema is a visual artist working in the genre of landscape: both within and without of an exhibition space, to include photography, installation, storytelling and painting.
Working to engage the elegiac loss of landscape through materials bound to fragile ecological systems and their decline, Yntema works primarily with natural elements: beeswax, natural resin, earth, ash and fibers as well as, elemental forces, such as wind, rain and changing atmospheres to encompass time and erosion.
Within the frame of landscape, encompassing the politics of land appropriation and land exploitation, her focus is the ecological and cultural politics of the changing landscape.
Iceland remains a unique environment: from geothermic energy, to a country built upon a stable political system where gender discrimination is minimized: Thank you, SÌM Residency, for this opportunity to explore the culture, history, myth and the spirit of the people and the land.
