Valentina, Julia, and Max are the young butterflies joining seven adult dancers in my ensemble work MONARCAS for a FREE performance in Bryant Park (NYC) on Friday, June 5 at 7pm. In the piece I am the old man wishing to join the Monarch butterflies on their journey that knows no borders. Thanks to @vildwerk ‘s visionary director Chiara Gorodesky for making it all possible. 🦋 World Butterfly Day
Today we celebrate the beauty, fragility, and resilience of butterflies — and at @vildwerk we celebrate our own butterfly, the extraordinary dancer Eriko Sugimura @erikosugimura .
In 2024, Eriko performed in Henning Rübsam’s @sensedancer Monarcas alongside ten luminous butterflies — a work inspired by the miraculous migration and vulnerability of monarch butterflies.
Today Eriko is facing a difficult personal journey as she undergoes treatment for cancer. We invite our community to stand with her with the same love and support she has always shared through her artistry.
