The body has been getting a hammering lately 😅
Here’s what a day in my life currently looks like!

The loads have been high both physically and mentally, whilst days like these are planned to be hard it’s important for me to remind myself to take a look at the bigger picture and make sure that things are kept balanced throughout the week. I’m always keeping a track of my training load, resting heart rate, HRV, recovery and stress levels to keep that in check. Workouts are always tracked with my @corosglobal Dura and body metrics through my Apex 4 Watch, I earnt myself a relaxing day after this one 💆‍♂️

The goals for the season have shaped up and the training has really focused up 🎯

During these high-load weeks the aim is to put real stress on the system, but the goal is not to overdo it. It’s important for me to record every work-out, how I’m sleeping, how I’m recovering, and overlay that data with my training plan to see if I can hit the intensity/quality I’m striving for in those key sessions 🔋

Using @corosglobal on and off the bike helps me keep track of things like training load, recovery, and sleep so I know I’m chasing gains, not drowning in fatigue. Whilst it’s easy to get caught up in the pursuit of always going hard all the time, I’ve been finding it useful to have a full range of data that makes it clear when I need to step off the gas in order to stay consistent long term graph 📈

Coaching is sick. DH. XC. Enduro. Road. And now...some gravel 👀

When you coach athletes who want nothing but the best out of themselves, you go through the highs and the lows with them. Sure your only job is to slap together some workouts and have a few phone calls and you never put out a single watt, but it's more than that.

@calebbottcher has had good legs and a good head space all season - especially heading to North America. Things didn't always go the way you'd want, which impacts the confidence (rider and yes, sometimes even coach). But it was awesome to see him work up the confidence to roll the dice on a 110km solo breakaway, ultimately normalizing more power for 7h45m than most of us can hold for 20min! 🚀

The point? Athletes getting what they want makes me feel good too!

Epic trip to Rakaposhi Basecamp. I was suffering badly from the heat for the first time in my life and almost turned around after 2 hours. The team kept me going and got me a coke, then when the clouds rolled in I felt like a totally different person. We rallied the next several hours and camped at basecamp with the most insane views of Mt Rakaposhi and the Minapin glacier. We rode one of the best descents on the planet the next morning.

Finally ticked off the Pakihi track with Mrs MTBPHD. We opted for the 2-day mission and hut stay so I could test my packing skills. What a time to be alive!

@sweaty_techie and I recently did a Demystifying MTB podcast episode on shorter cranks 👀

I switched to 165s 4 years ago and am loving them. They just feel good. And now that everyone knows that @tadejpogacar runs short cranks, the discussion has fired back up.

One issue with longer cranks is that your muscles have to shorten more quickly at a given cadence compared to shorter cranks. The reason for this is that you're making a bigger circle in the same amount of time - your feet (and muscles) are literally moving faster to cover this extra real estate.

There are two potential issues here. The first potential issue is that you have fewer cross bridges in formation at the top of the stroke with longer cranks (which we didn't discuss), and the second is that faster shortening speeds with longer cranks could be increasing the friction generated by the filaments themselves (which we did discuss and speculate on).

While I'm a bit rusty on my muscle mechanics and all of this could be completely off base, there are still plenty of takeaways for all out MTB friends 🫶
Plus shorter cranks just feel good!

Is anyone still on 175s? Do you like them? Have any of you tall folks tried shorter cranks?

Not bike related, but here's dad winning the 60+ category yesterday 🏆 you know how the old saying goes: if you're not blasting Creed and pumping iron in the basement at 5am every day waking up your teenagers, you'll never win a figure show!
