Film + Ski

A lot of days working in ski boots this year 🤪

I usually only see the Boston skyline from the bus at the start or conclusion to a visit home. The view doesn’t mean all that much to me. But this evening, the color of the sky, the city lights and the way the smoke came out of these stacks this evening felt particular.

Three weeks ago a hustled back to Lyme to help my grandmother, “Grinny”, in her last few days. She was 93 and died in the same house she spent the last 60+ years in. Just down the hill from dad’s house where I grew up.

Watching her die was both monumental and mundane. It mostly consisted of reading her stories and helping her drink lemonade. Every once in a while she would sort of say something, but mostly she listened.

A week earlier she was getting by just fine. A few days later in the early morning, my Aunt Jennifer heard her take her last breath. Not long after, I stood in front of her house with my dad and watched her body get rolled out to a mini-van under a starry, moonless sky.

Tonight, on my way to the airport, I watched smoke come out of this “crematorium” (which is what I decided this building would be for me) and I felt a little more connected to her…and a little more connected to Boston I guess…or at least in the way that I now have something in the skyline that I can look at as I pass.

When a brain injury changed everything, Madi had to find a new summit.

Brain injuries are more common than most people realize. A fall, a car accident, a sports collision…millions of people each year experience brain injuries of all shapes and sizes. Even “mild” cases can mean living with changes in memory, focus, energy, or emotional regulation that don’t show up on the outside but can reshape a person on the inside.

The question isn’t if you’ll be different. The question is can you build a life you love after brain injury? Can you can adapt, build new systems, and create a life that actually works for you?

In the brain injury community, storytelling is vital. Sharing experiences helps survivors have mindset and hope, feel less isolated, validates their struggles, and provides hope through real examples of resilience and recovery. Stories create connection, reduce stigma, and offer practical insights that medical information alone cannot provide.

Madi is one of several brain injury survivors that will be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro next summer and taking part of a film about life after brain injury. The film will be an exploration of a community of brain injury survivors and serve as a road map of others rebuilding their life after a brain injury.

How do you make filming kids at summer camp fun?
1. Make it simple
2. Keep it moving
3. Let them play

We’re making a short film about the evolving world of affordable summer camps at a time when rising costs and other pressures are putting these experiences out of reach for many kids. Most camps are becoming overly expensive and inaccessible, but some are finding creative ways to keep the doors open.

We’re gonna do something different here. Instead of waiting to show you a polished film at the end,we’re gonna share everything as we make it. BTS, scenes, story elements & all the puzzle pieces that make a finished film.

We’d love to hear from folks along the way about what they think of the process! Or if people have a summer camp that is close to their heart and want to share what you would want us to consider about a film on this topic.
