#ArtnetNews: A decade on from the National Park Service (NPS) announcing plans to transform the cavernous space beneath the Lincoln Memorial into a museum, tickets for the newest attraction on the National Mall have gone on sale ahead of its opening on June 25, in time for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Tickets for large tours of the undercroft on opening day are already sold out.

The underground space at the monument dedicated to the 16th president of the United States is called the undercroft, typically a type of cellar or storage space with a vaulted ceiling. The undercroft features a grid of concrete columns that has been converted into a 15,000-square-foot exhibition space. It details how the memorial was built and the role the site has played in shaping American perceptions of Abraham Lincoln.

#TheArtAnglePodcast: This week, Ben Davis (@benstoppable) speaks to Arthur Jafa (@anamibia) about his art, his view of art history, and what comes next.

Jafa is probably the most revered artist of the last decade. Born in 1960, in Tupelo, Mississippi, he came up through the world of cinema. But Jafa also found his way into the art world with his difficult video work and strange objects.

In art, his reputation went vertical in 2016 with the video, Love Is the Message, the Message Is Death. It is a collage of found footage from social media that included police violence against Black people and also moments of viral celebration and joy. It was both experimental and accessible, and drew huge crowds when it was first shown at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise in New York.

#ArtnetNews: Reality is, indeed, often stranger than fiction. Take last October’s sensational Louvre heist, for instance—two thieves donned disguises, smashed their way into the world’s most famous museum, and made off with eight historic jewels believed to be worth €88 million ($102 million), all in under eight minutes (even as security cameras watched!)

A handful of suspects have been charged, yet the jewels remain at large. In the meantime, this bona fide true crime fodder is officially getting the silver screen treatment. Development has started on a still-unnamed feature film immortalizing the now infamous robbery, courtesy of Paris-based production company Iconoclast, which has purchased the rights to "A Grab at the Louvre", the latest book on the crime.

#ArtnetNews: Tiwani Contemporary, a world-leading platform for contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, has permanently closed its London gallery. Its Lagos location has also paused operations ahead of a planned restructuring.

The gallery cited “financial challenges,” worsened by rising operation costs and “a difficult market” for contemporary art, as the reason for its “extremely painful” decision to close.

#ArtnetNews: The Garden Museum in London has launched a campaign to buy the earliest known portrait of a Black British gardener. The museum hopes to raise $560,000 to keep the rare historical record in a public U.K. collection.

The prized 18th-century painting by an unknown artist, depicts John Ystumllyn, a renowned gardener who lived and worked in Wales. When he sat for the portrait in 1754, John was in his late teens, and is shown elegantly dressed in a blue suit and waistcoat. The painting has been on loan to the Garden Museum since 2023, but the institution hopes to see it permanently installed beside Portrait of a Black Gardener, another 1905 portrait by Harold Gilman that it acquired in 2013.

#ArtnetNews: Some 200 copies of the medieval King Arthur saga live in institutions around the world. Seven are complete, the rest are fragments. Very few belong to private collectors. One pristine example from this Lancelot-Grail Cycle, however, will make its auction debut on July 8, after 700 years in private hands, when Christie’s offers the artifact at its live Valuable Books and Manuscripts sale in London. There, experts expect the Clermont-Tonnerre Grail to fetch £1.5 million–£2 million ($2 million–$2.6 million).

The full Lancelot-Grail Cycle—also known as the Vulgate Cycle—spans the ubiquitous romantic epic of King Arthur and his court, including the quest for the Holy Grail and stories of legendary characters like Lancelot the knight and Merlin the magician. Numerous versions of the story exist, attributed to numerous authors, rendering scholarship all the more important.

#ArtnetNews: Is this quill working? That is the question captured in the wavy brown-ink lines marking the top of a page pulled from Peter Paul Rubens’s Roman notebook. Below the squiggles, likely made by the artist testing his quill pen, three men in classical robes are rendered in a swift, confident sketch. On the reverse, Rubens drafts a letter to the artist Cristoforo Roncalli, inquiring after the progress of a painting on behalf of their shared patron, Eleonora de’ Medici.

Dated to September of 1607, the double-sided sheet offers the young Fleming playing both artist and negotiator during his second extended stay in the Eternal City. More than 400 years on, the rare notebook sheet has gone on display in Rubens’s hometown of Antwerp after being acquired at TEFAF Maastricht by the King Baudouin Foundation (KBF) for €110,000 ($121,100).

#ArtnetAuctions: Explore iconic works offered in "Contemporary Editions", from pioneering Pop Art by Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, to the colourful invented landscapes of Shara Hughes.

The auction features prints such as Banksy's "Laugh Now", which brings together the artist's signature social commentary and one of his favourite motifs — monkeys. Now one of Banksy's most well-known images, the design was originally commissioned in the early 2000s as a mural by a Brighton nightclub.

Other works include pieces by Conceptual artist Damien Hirst, who was part of the Young British Artists movement that rose to prominence in the early 1990s. Hirst's provocative and wide-ranging approach — which often blends art, science and more — questions the very nature of what art can be.

#ArtnetNews: In the late 1960s, archaeologists discovered a large Neolithic structure at Durrington Walls, a vast site two miles northeast of Stonehenge, where those who built the stone monument likely gathered and feasted. Named Durrington 68, its purpose has remained a mystery despite follow up excavations in the mid-2000s: it might have been a ceremonial space, a gathering hall, or simply a barn for animals.

More than 4,500 years on, Durrington 68 has been reimagined as a learning center by English Heritage, the U.K. heritage organization, which has erected a replica of the structure at Stonehenge. Reaching more than 20 feet in height, the hall was built over the course of nine months by a team of more than 100 volunteers who relied on the tools and techniques of their Neolithic ancestors. This has meant recreating stone tools, using a woodland management technique known as coppicing, and creating a cement-like mixture of chalk, water, and straw called chalk daub.

#OnView: French artist JR has taken over Paris’s Pont Neuf—the oldest bridge over the Seine, and the city’s first built from stone, not wood. Still warm from unveiling his facade for the Venice Venice Hotel during the Venice Biennale, JR’s hotly awaited hometown installation La Caverne du Pont Neuf (2026) measures 120 meters long, 20 meters wide, and, in some spots, 18 meters tall. On June 6, it will start welcoming guests inside, where sound and augmented reality await. More than 800 people would have helped pull it off.

#ArtnetNews: After disappearing for more than a century, two altarpiece paintings that once belonged to a church in Seville have been recovered and returned by the art crime unit of Spanish police.

In September 2025, Spanish police were alerted by the Archdiocese of Seville to two paintings listed in an auction house catalog that were thought to have once belonged to the church of the Hospital of the Venerable Priests, a chapel in the city’s historic center. Following investigations by the Spanish Historical Heritage Brigade, it was determined that the oval paintings were indeed by Lucas Valdés, the Baroque painter who had provided altarpiece works for the church in the last years of the 17th century.

On May 20, the pine board oil paintings were handed back to the Hospital of the Venerable Priests in a ceremony attended by senior figures from the Archdiocese of Seville and Historical Heritage Brigade staff.
