Join us as candidates debate architecture and the climate emergency in our 2026 RIBA President election hustings, hosted by @architectsdeclare_uk + @architectscan
All four candidates for the role of President of the RIBA will be joining us at AHMM to debate the relationship of architecture as a profession and discipline to the climate and biodiversity emergency.
We will invite each candidate to include their response to AD & ACAN’s statement:
“We believe that the President of the RIBA must intervene to maximise architects’ agency for positive change on the Climate and Biodiversity Emergency, and demonstrate where government, institutions and industry can lead on systems change towards fully regenerative solutions. All candidates are invited to set out how their presidency would address UK Architects Declare’s principles and ACAN!’s overarching aims.”
This is your chance to hear from them and ask questions.

We need change!
ACAN International and various European ACAN chapters are members of the Assembly for a Just Building Transition and have collaborated on a statement defining the political direction of this movement. Have a read above! The three focus areas are:
+ Social justice over speculation
+ Reuse over demolition
+ Biodiversity over Extraction
We’re excited to gather in-person for the 3rd Assembly in Prague, 29-31 May, to plan collective actions and next steps for this movement. Huge thanks to @architects4future for their efforts convening and energising our network.
One of the network’s first flagship activities will be the European Action Week, 5th - 13th September 2026. A decentralised festival of local actions, gathering and events exploring how we want to live, build and shape our communities and built environment. This is open to anyone, individual or organised, and the open call was recently launched by A4F - Head to their page for more info and get involved.

‼️ Don’t forget to register for our upcoming technical webinar on ventilation and air quality!
Poor ventilation is one of the most overlooked drivers of unhealthy buildings, and one of the most consequential factors in energy use and carbon emissions. This session makes the case for why air quality deserves serious attention: as a health issue, a regulatory consideration, and a worthwhile investment of time and budget.
From that foundation, the session moves into the core principles of how ventilation works, surveying the main system types and offering honest comparisons of alternative approaches. Rather than treating systems as equivalent choices, the session explores what each achieves in practice, including where they excel and where they fall short.
The design perspective then takes centre stage, covering the practical challenges of integrating ventilation into buildings, from early-stage coordination through to construction. This includes managing the tension between fresh air delivery and heat loss, understanding what different approaches mean for energy and carbon targets, and interpreting efficiency metrics in context.
The session closes by shifting focus to outcomes: how to define what good performance looks like for a given system, how to assess whether it is being delivered in use, and what the evidence says regarding the “when, what, and why” of different ventilation strategies.

Taking a look back on Tuesday at Futurebuild! @futurebuildnow
In the morning, the spotlight was on circular economy, starting with a mapping exercise from our Circular Economy group, a talk on reuse infrastructure, and a hands-on workshop exploring reclaimed materials.
At lunch, we held a roundtable for our new campaign, Less Carbon, More Truth!, which launched across the week at Futurebuild. Keep an eye out for how to get involved in the campaign over the coming months.
A debate on the built environment sector kicked off the afternoon, followed by a networking session introducing Construction Collage and the launch of our new Passivhaus thematic workgroup.
What was your Tuesday highlight? Let us know in the comments below

🌍 On Earth Day the ACAN Circular Economy Taskforce hosted a packed and energising discussion on The Business Case for Circular Construction at White Arkitekter’s London studio.
A huge thank you to everyone who joined us.
The panel featured experts across the material reuse value chain, covering design, manufacturing, storage and logistics, policy, project management, fit-out and deconstruction:
- Christian Dimbleby, Head of Sustainability UK at White Arkitekter and member of the ACAN Circular Economy taskgroup
- Talia Berriman, Head of Green Economy, London Borough of Newham
- Charnett Chau, Life Cycle Services Lead, Saint-Gobain UK & Ireland
- Joel De Mowbray, Director, Yes Make and Tipping Point East
- Oscar Leigh-Hales, Sustainability Advisor, ODGroup
- Patrick Watson, Partner, 3pm Project Management
Chaired by Christian Dimbleby, the session questioned: how do we make circular construction stack up commercially - and communicate that clearly to decision-makers?
Three initial take-aways from the evening:
1. Reuse strategies need clear articulation
2. Logistics and services are key to optimising benefits
3. Policy incentives support the social and business case
Many thanks to the speakers, attendees, and event support for an inspiring evening🙌

Join us for an in person bookclub special at Futurebuild 2026! @futurebuildnow
In line with Futurebuild’s theme of connection, ACAN Climate Literacy Bookclub is moving offline for an in person session to discuss ‘How to Fall in Love with the Future: A Time Traveller’s Guide to Changing the World by Rob Hopkins’
We’re only 4 years from 2030, the year set out in the Paris Climate Agreement for limiting warming to 1.5 degrees. We know achieving this seems increasingly impossible. What we need now more than ever is hope, optimism, and radical collective imagination.
📍Come join us at the ExCel London, Stand H25 to meet and discuss with fellow climate time travellers.
📚 Book swap! As a bonus, please bring a climate themed book with you to swap with another member of the session.
There will be no online capacity with this event

Studies show the UK’s 28.6 million homes are among the least energy efficient in Europe and lose heat up to three times faster than on the continent, making people poorer and colder.
We need to act now. Come see us at Futurebuild next week for the launch of our new campaign and find out how you can help take action ✊
