A small ongoing thing we run in the corner of our shop. The brief is simple: draw TOBY, our Chief HNG Officer, however you like. Pencil, crayon, watercolor, the back of a receipt. All welcome. Skill level: irrelevant.

What gets us every month is how people meeting TOBY for the first time still find their own version of him. Some give him hats, some go chaotic, some go tiny. Each one undeniably TOBY, somehow.

Every month TOBY picks 6 winners. 3 Gold Hands for technical brilliance, and 3 HNG Hands for pure unfiltered HNG. Each one gets a little gift in the mail.

Submissions happen in the shop, but the prizes don’t stop at Seoul. So far we‘ve sent gifts to winners in the U.S., Canada, Singapore, the U.K., and beyond. 🖍

This summer, Piece Layer’s seasonal HNG-scent series continues with MONAEGI, the smell of Korean rice-planting season.

Following NAMULKAEGI (spring green foraging) earlier this year, MONAEGI is the second of four in our seasonal HNG-scent series with @lizzle.kr

So what does ‘Monaegi’ smell like? It’s the early-summer moment when farmers wade knee-deep into flooded paddies to plant rice seedlings by hand. Paddy mud, crushed grass, warm sun on still water. The whole field humming green.
That’s what we’re trying to bottle. 🌱 Sampling is in progress!
