Though no longer embodied with us, that circle still sustains Agosto. 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘥𝘰 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘢𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘩𝘰 𝘨𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘦 𝘴𝘰 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘭𝘰𝘷𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘧𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘮𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘵𝘩. Keeping the ashes of nine of her friends, Agosto intends to continue her work across generations. She wishes someday for her ashes to be comingled with those on her altar, and ritually scattered in the Hudson River. 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘐 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘱𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘦, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘫𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘴, 𝘴𝘺𝘮𝘣𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺, 𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳. 𝘞𝘦’𝘷𝘦 𝘴𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘭𝘰𝘵.

🌹Legends from the Archives: Sheri Payne🌹

Sheri has been wowing audiences as a showgirl for more than 40 years. She has persistently shifted the conversation forward and evolved with the times, witnessing generations of trans femme and drag performers pass through The Baton, a “female impersonation” review in Chicago where she has worked since 1980.

I first discovered Sheri Payne’s magical presence on stage at the Baton where I saw her winning smile radiating warmth and acceptance over her adoring audience. Payne is a consummate entertainer, and, with a background in dance, her signature high kicks and full splits always elicit a frenzy of adulation.

Known for performing Whitney Houston hits for the duration of her years on stage, an archival YouTube video reveals Sheri commanding a brigade of back-up dancers in a Whitney Houston medley. Sheri’s talent jumps off the screen much in the same way it does when watching Houston, and her life parallels a similar trajectory to Houston’s—both having battled with substance abuse and been led astray by bad boys.

Sheri’s resilience has lived up to her mother’s words: “Your community of girls are the strongest people on the planet because you have the courage to be who you are. No matter what nobody else says.”

In light of this important distinction, I was honored she agreed to work with us on Legends of Drag. When we completed her essay for the book, I called her and read it aloud for her approval. She was moved to tears, referring to the text as “scripture.” The highest praise from a self-described woman of god.🪽

Re-reading her Legends profile today, I’m moved by her wry humor and razor-sharp street wisdom: 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘯𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘯𝘰 𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘴. Few living queer elders hold as much of our vital history as Joan Jett Blakk. Her militancy stretches back 50 years— to the Gay Liberation Front in Detroit and the first Radical Faerie gatherings in the Midwest, as a founder of Queer Nation in Chicago, and through ACT UP in San Francisco. She made history in 1992 as the first drag queen to run for president, as a Queer Nation candidate. She says of her campaign: 𝘞𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘳 𝘶𝘱 𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦.

Her life weaves together the vanguards of the queer movement, Black liberation, punk, drag, and a searing mockery of the dead ends of the electoral system. Joan’s story plays out as the subject of a 2019 play, Ms. Blakk for President, as well as a 2021 documentary, The Beauty President. Now, this queer visionary needs our support. Joan experienced a major stroke in 2024, and will require lifelong care.

Few living queer elders hold as much of our vital history as Joan Jett Blakk. Her militancy stretches back 50 years— to the Gay Liberation Front in Detroit and the first Radical Faerie gatherings in the Midwest, as a founder of Queer Nation in Chicago, and through ACT UP in San Francisco. She made history in 1992 as the first drag queen to run for president, as a Queer Nation candidate. She says of her campaign: 𝘞𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘳 𝘶𝘱 𝘢𝘴 𝘮𝘶𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘣𝘭𝘦 𝘢𝘴 𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦.

Her life weaves together the vanguards of the queer movement, Black liberation, punk, drag, and a searing mockery of the dead ends of the electoral system. Joan’s story plays out as the subject of a 2019 play, Ms. Blakk for President, as well as a 2021 documentary, The Beauty President. Now, this queer visionary needs our support. Joan experienced a major stroke in 2024, and will require lifelong care.
