The chair for a restaurant is maybe the most important decision you make when selecting and designing a venue. We literally spent three years looking at chairs. We just couldn’t find the perfect one. John Wardle and I must have spent hundreds of hours discussing chairs. (Sometimes after dinner service… sorry john)

Eventually, after meeting at Melbourne Design Week, we spoke with @jongoulder . We were drawn to his formed-leather work, something we had never really seen applied to dining chairs, especially in a restaurant setting.

Jon then spent over 12 months developing the chair, with many prototypes and rounds of refinement, to create what we think is a masterpiece: the Pavilion Dining Room Chair. Formed leather, plated brass, and Tasmanian Blackwood.

I reckon this chair will become an icon of Australian furniture design in the years to come. Well done, Jon.

Go give him a follow and support Australian makers!

The timber frame Festival Chair, shown alongside the debut of the Mantle lighting collection in water-formed leather.

Developed through an ongoing dialogue between material, process, and form, both collections are grounded in a shared belief that things are resolved through making. Exploring leather, steel, timber, and light, the Festival Chair will be presented in leather, steel, and timber editions.

Presented as part of Conversations by @alpha60thelabel and @jongoulder at Chapter House during @ngvmelbourne Melbourne Design Week.

Intersection Table

by Jon Goulder and Henry Williams

The most recent outcome of an ongoing exchange on architecture, craft, and technology. Having first met a decade ago while working at Snøhetta - their collaboration continues through an active dialogue of critique, testing ideas through both conversation and making. The work explores tensions between craft and technology, nature and artifice, material control and material expression, and legibility and deception.

Designed and made for Melbourne Design Week using Crafted Hardwoods.

Presenting at Chapter House with Alpha 60 from the 14th to the 24th May.

Pavilion Dining Chair

Ghan Railway

Referencing the legacy of transcontinental rail, the Gold Premium carriages reinterpret the romance of slow travel through an Australian lens. Designed by Woods Bagot, the interiors draw on Federation-era and arts-and-crafts influences, with a palette shaped by the landscape and the work of Albert Namatjira.

Within this setting, Jon Goulder designed and handmade the dining chairs—crafted for enduring comfort and aligned with the project’s focus on authenticity, durability, and connection to place.
