My younger self did not know.

He did not know that one day I would stand at the racetrack, Mt. Fuji in the distance, and that I would be crying. Not the crying of a child who has lost something. The crying of a man who has finally realized a dream.

For years, a voice said you are a failure, and a louder one agreed. I carried it through every relationship I could not keep, every dream I deferred.

"You're too old. You don't have the talent. You simply can't." And so I didn't.

But this year — this year I stopped running.

I trained until my body hurt in places I didn't know could hurt. There were injuries. There was an ambulance ride. And there was a relationship — a real and meaningful one — that ended in the middle of all of this. Because some doors only open when others close, even when you don't want them to.

So I raced.

My very first official race. I survived it. I was alive.

Now, standing here — the sun going gold, Mt. Fuji watching like an old, kind god — I understand something I have been trying to understand my whole life.

This is what it feels like to be alive.

Was it worth it? The hard work. The pain. The breakup.

I'll let you know once I stop crying.

I think of my younger self. I want him to see this. Look, I tell him — look at what we accomplished.

This is only the beginning.
