Website design and development for video artist Ben Hagari, thinking about the magic and worlds of theatre, woven through its artifice, facade, and backstage … 🎭

Building on Ben’s fascination with the history of the moving image, the site takes inspiration from early 20th century film tropes. Page transitions are staged via iris shots, which are in turn based on object silhouettes from Ben’s work. Each project has its own color theme to match its world.

Some favorite moments from @antsoftheprairie website

🐜 idle behavior where the ants break free of the pavement grid after ~20s of visitor inactivity and swarm a random image on screen, drawn to it like a sugar cube (video sped up)

🐜🐜 text outlined with marching “ants,” forever in motion

🐜🐜🐜 various other details across the site inspired by the “marching ants” marquee animation effect

🐜🐜🐜🐜 ants color-coded by page type (sky for projects, grass for news, and, well, ant for about / info) coexist on the homepage … and are averse to your thumb everywhere

Exhibition identity, custom typeface, title wall animations, and intro and section texts for Video After Video: The Critical Media of CAMP, a show at MoMA by the Mumbai-based artist collective CAMP.

Stillヾ(✿゚▽゚)ノ that I got to bootleg MoMA’s official typeface on my very first show. The end result was “MoMA Wrong,”a topsy-turvy take on MoMA Sans, in tribute to CAMP’s own DIY typeface, “Wrong Font.”

An additional treat to work with were CAMP’s “backronyms” — backend acronyms procedurally generated to expand the possibilities of their name — which I made into a motion graphic for the title wall. I had a secret ambition to make a website that would actually generate infinite randomizations of backronyms for the projection, but alas … everything was manual in the end (Indesign scripting notwithstanding) … my one regret ……

Some fave backronyms: Code As Magical Promises, Contracts Allowing for My Protests, Challenges After My Promises, Culture After More People

Loved being able to work on a show that was all about new media, archives, institutional intervention, bootlegging, and playful critique •ू(ᵒ̴̶̷ωᵒ̴̶̷*•ू))੭ु)

Designed and developed a website for @antsoftheprairie with @3000000000am … this was stewing and brewing for a long time, truly a labor of love

In tribute to the pavement ants of New York, where ants of the prairie is based, the website is structured by pavement grids teeming with “ants” that are also quotes about ants 🐜💞
