On this day in 1821, the rubber hose was invented by James Boyd of Boston, Massachusetts, who patented a cotton-web fire hose lined with rubber to replace leaky, heavy, riveted leather.

"But man is in a tight place, the poor slave is on him, woman is coming on him, and he is surely between-a hawk and a buzzard"
From Sojourner Truth's seminal speech, later titled "Ain't I a Woman?", delivered on this day 175 years ago.
The American abolitionist and women's rights activist was born enslaved, escaping to freedom with her infant daughter in 1826, and became a key figure in the fight against slavery during the 19th century. Her impromptu address at the Ohio Women's Rights Convention emphasised the intersecting oppressions of being both Black and a woman in the US.
Truth's words were first transcribed in the Anti-Slavery Bugle newspaper by her friend and ally Marius Robinson, who was present during the speech. The repeated question, "Ain't I a Woman?", does not appear in Robinson's account but was incorporated into an amended version twelve years later by suffragist Frances Dana Barker Gage. Her interpretation became more widely known, though is now considered historically inaccurate.
Shown here below this portrait of Truth is a phrase that alludes to one of photography's early slogans: "Secure the shadow [photograph] ere the substance [body] fade". It refers to the activist's means of earning money at the time by copyrighting her own image and selling photographs.

Tintype Portraits
These images are a set of developed negatives that look like positives, direct from the camera. Commonly called Tintypes, they are also known as Melainotypes, Melanographs, or Ferrotypes, and there is actually no tin support involved.
The Tintype is a variation of the silver-based, wet collodion photographic process, produced on a dark lacquered or varnished thin sheet of iron (approx. 0.15mm). They are like Ambrotypes produced on glass, but cheaper, less fragile, lighter in weight, faster, and easier to produce.
You can still have your portrait taken by a skilled tintypist today – the process and their unusual beauty endured - but credit for their introduction goes to Adolphe-Alexandre Martin who described it to the French Academy of Sciences back in 1853.

In the early morning of 27th May 1911, a fire broke out as workers hurried to repair a concession at Dreamland, Coney Island, in preparation for the Memorial Day weekend. In their urgency, workers kicked over a bucket of hot tar being used to repair a leak in 'Hell Gate', a boat ride. The ride was soon in flames.
The new water pumping station, built specifically for Coney Island, boasted a water pressure of at least 125 pounds; however, when called into action, the pressure was closer to 20 pounds. The fire left 2,500 people unemployed.

On this day in 1931, the first successful manned flight into the stratosphere took place.
Onboard the hydrogen balloon within a pressurised aluminium cabin were Auguste Piccard, a Swiss physicist and inventor, and his assistant, Paul Kipfer. Launching from Augsburg in Germany, they reached an altitude of over 50,000 feet, where Piccard was able to study cosmic rays and atmospheric conditions at extreme heights.
Not only did the flight break the world altitude record but it also marked a breakthrough in our understanding of the stratosphere – for example, confirming that humans could survive at such altitudes.

"The stars don't look bigger, but they do look brighter"
Sally Ride – the first American woman in space – on the view during orbit.
Born 75 years ago today, she joined NASA as part of the first class to accept women, selected as one of six among 35 astronauts in total.
It was in 1983 that she made history by flying aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger as a mission specialist. Ride played a key role in developing the robotic arm for the shuttle, operating it in space to deploy and retrieve satellites.
Leaving NASA four years later, she dedicated her life to science education, serving as a professor and co-founding Sally Ride Science, a programme that encourages young girls to pursue careers in STEM. Ride died in 2012 from pancreatic cancer, leaving a lasting influence on space exploration and gender equality within the sciences.
