Super grateful to be included in the group exhibition — 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙞 𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙥𝙞𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙨 — curated by Thomas Demand.Opening at 7pm tonight in Vienna and on view through Sept 20th. Much appreciation to the kind and welcoming Fiona and Manisha at fjk3 Contemporary Art Space. And many thanks to assistant curator, Christy Lange, who wrote these words on the show:
The exhibition 𝙋𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙞 𝙡𝙚𝙨 𝙥𝙞𝙚𝙧𝙧𝙚𝙨, curated by the internationally renowned artist Thomas Demand, revolves around images that do not simply depict, but simultaneously produce the reality to which they refer: perception as construction, memory as montage, the image as a form of history. In this movement, the work itself becomes a space of thought—not as a representation, but as an arrangement of visibility.
The exhibition brings together 27 positions from photography, film, and sculpture. All of them move between reportage and reconstruction, between the observed moment and the staged image, between a historical event and its representation. The works selected for the exhibition share aspects of image composition and spatial arrangement, and in many cases also the seemingly incidental, almost unnoticed presence of the camera. Figures often appear in front of architecture, frequently turned away from the camera. They suggest a relationship to the surrounding spaces which, upon closer inspection, proves to be more a supposition than a confirmed connection.

The next Jury announcement is photographer Daniel Postaer (@dpostaer) 🥳
Based in Los Angeles, Daniel’s large-scale color work explores the tensions of contemporary life and the transformation of urban spaces. With pieces held in major collections like the Met and SFMOMA, he brings a deep, cinematic perspective to our panel.
Daniel isn’t just looking for a clear subject, he’s looking for images that “command attention” and raise more questions than they answer. He wants to be transported.
Swipe through to read his full advice on how to make your work feel both determined and expansive.
📸 The Open Call is now live until May 31st. Link in bio to enter!

A picture book can only be so big.Several of my final prints from the Mother’s Land series didn’t make the book. Many photographers refer to these pictures as “outtakes.” In movies or TV, an outtake applies to a scene that didn’t make the final cut. While I understand that term for the moving-picture, an outtake sounds like something just discarded. The pictures that didn’t make the final edit of the monograph aren’t thrown away. They continue to live in my studio flat file hoping for the chance to find future walls, or perhaps a place in a future book.I’ll be posting some of these final prints here in the coming weeks. (If anyone has a better term than an outtake within this context, please do share!)

“In this photograph, Daniel Postaer contrasts the physical decay of San Francisco’s Mission district with the cultural vibrancy and energy represented by the graffiti that covers the walls and buildings in the area. The image is part of Postaer’s series Boomtown. The title is not merely ironic: The abandoned building, likely to be demolished as part of the ongoing gentrification of the area, has become a site to display the booming creativity of the neighborhood’s predominately Latine population. Postaer invites us to look at the urban environment as a vehicle for cultural display and to reevaluate our assumptions about what constitutes urban development and progress“
A lil latergram here from our visit to the @deyoungmuseum exhibition “Boom and Bust: Photographing Northern California”, including my piece: 𝙎𝙖𝙣 𝙁𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤, 𝘼𝙗𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙈𝙞𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙎𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚𝙩, 𝟮𝟬𝟭𝟮 from my 𝘽𝙤𝙤𝙢𝙩𝙤𝙬𝙣 series. So sweet that @treadwellpress and Chris met us at the show 🤗.
Honored to be hanging next to my teacher from SFAI, @janet_delaney, on these walls 🙏.
The show will be on view through June 7, 2026 and is wonderfully curated by Sally Katz. The photographs span from the discovery of gold in 1848 to the tech boom of this century.I’m grateful to be included and encourage you to check it out if you’re in the Bay.

A quick look at Mother’s Land by Daniel Lee Postaer
Mother’s Land is a collection of dioramas, of unscripted scenes in which we see a shifting 2010s China unfold before our eyes. It is, also, the result of a long, introspective journey that led Daniel Lee Postaer in search of a missing part of his identity—the one left behind by his grandparents who, more than fifty years earlier and fleeing the communist regime, could take along a daughter, but were forced to abandon another.
In search of this “other half,” Postaer lived in China in the early 2000s, and returned several times in the second half of the 2010s, becoming a first-hand witness to the country’s contemporary developments.
In an all-encompassing portrait of urban China, in large-scale compositions embracing a multitude of characters and scenes, Mother’s Land shows us a country in the throes of economic and social transformations. A brutal country, too, that erases without scruple, without memory; which demolishes to rebuild further, bigger, higher. A country in mutation, where contrasts become apparent, where the smooth and shiny surfaces of glass and hypermodernity clash with the coarseness of rubble scattered among ruins. A country in which time moves violently fast, in which each year seems like five, and where the traces of Postaer’s previous life seem to evaporate. Only the construction sites reveal, through the rubble, all the strata of time gone by—sedimentary layers unearthing vestiges of the past.
