Bill Jacobson in conversation with writer and curator @yung_sch0lar:
EXiT at Catharine Clark Gallery, March 17th, 6.30 pm

Catharine Clark Gallery is pleased to announce the release of Bill Jacobson's new edition, "when is a place." The publication consists of the book (three handbound components, 84 pages total) in a custom case, the choice of one of two pigment prints created in the artist's studio, and texts by Wayne Koestenbaum and Marvin Heiferman. when is a place is published by Some Planes Press and distributed by @exitatccg

The photographs, created between 2018 and 2020, are mostly landscapes made in Virginia, the south of France, and Upstate New York during the Covid pandemic. There are also figure studies created in the artist's East Village studio in 2019. With a mix of deep black tones, an extraordinary range of grays, and bleached bright whites on heavy paper, the reproductions feel more akin to gravure printing than traditional offset.

Jacobson's defocused photographs, a hallmark of much of his work for over three decades, explore feelings of loss, fading memories, and unknown futures. While the artist's work in the 1990s was in response to the AIDS epidemic, Jacobson, 70, now explores focus as a metaphor for aging, climate change, and the transient nature of being. Book: Edition of 100 + 20 Artist's Proofs

Two prints: Each in editions of 50 + 10 Artist's Proofs, available either mounted or framed

$1,000: includes custom case, book, and choice of 11 x 14 inch pigment prints mounted to Dibond; and domestic shipping. Order via the link in our bio.
