Earlier in March, our Rekindling Youth and Education Programs Team completed Gathering One in Port Augusta, South Australia!

Across these first days together, young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students came together to meet our Rekindling team, connect with one another, and step into a shared creative space grounded in culture, story and care. Through movement, conversation and listening, this first Gathering lays the foundation for trust, connection and cultural pride - the starting point of a journey they will carry forward together.

Our team looks forward to returning throughout the year to continue this work and walking alongside these young people as their stories take shape.

Introducing our Rekindling Youth and Education Programs Team for 2026!

Youth and Education Program Director - Sidney Saltner, Youth and Education Program Coordinator - Sani Townson, Youth and Education Programs Team Tutor - Amy Weatherall and Youth and Education Programs Coordinator - Lavinia Gibbs.

Rekindling inspires pride, kinship and a sense of strength in young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders through a series of dance residencies with secondary school-aged students. Over the course of the year, participants spend time On Country, gather stories with guidance from Community Elders and develop skills to produce thought-provoking performances and events.

Another incredible year at the NSW Schools Spectacular, 2025 was truly Remarkable!

"Heal" opened the second act, featuring almost 200 of our Aboriginal Dance Company and Aboriginal Dance Ensemble.

A huge congratulations to our Youth Programs Tutor @holly_faulds for creating her first arena performance. Not only did Holly do the choreography, she also designed the costumes, and wove the chest pieces for our featured singers. A full circle moment for Holly, who was a member of the Aboriginal Dance Company herself from 2016-2019, she is the first ADC alumni to choreograph at Schools Spec.

A massive thank you goes to our amazing students that performed for us this year. Your dedication and pride in your Culture, shone through on stage, you really helped bring this piece to life and we are so grateful to you all. And a big thank you to your teachers for bringing you all the way across the state to participate.

A special shoutout to some of our Company parents, who spent hours hand painting all 200 costumes!

A big thank you to @mitchtambo for allowing us to use his beautiful song and consulting on the Language with our talented featured singers, Aurielle, Lily, and Kyla.

To our Ensemble and Company managers, thank you for always keeping things running smoothly, for caring for our students and ensuring they all felt welcome. And to all the Arts Unit staff, we certainly couldn't do it without your help.

Make sure to tune in to Channel 7 on Friday 19th December to catch the 2025 Schools Spectacular broadcast!

State Dance Festival - 2025 NSW Public Schools Aboriginal Dance Company

Within Us - Choreographed by @holly__faulds

“Within Us" is a contemporary dance work that delves into the lived experiences of Aboriginal dancers navigating cultural identity in the modern world. This piece is an exploration of what it means to carry culture in the body, how history, community, and connection shape identity from the inside out.

A massive congratulations to Youth Programs Tutor, Holly Faulds, for this beautiful piece. A full circle moment for Holly, who spent her high school years performing as a member of the Aboriginal Dance Company, to now choreographing on the next generation of storytellers.

And a huge thank you to our company dancers for their incredible performances this week! Thank you for sharing this story with so much care and passion, your hardwork definitely paid off!

Don’t forget to tune in to Channel 7 tonight at 7pm to catch the 2024 Schools Spectacular broadcast!

Yirimi Gundir opens the show, featuring 200+ of our Aboriginal Dance Company and Ensemble. A congratulations to our Youth Program Tutor @amy.weatherall for creating her first arena piece with the biggest cohort to date. And a massive thank you to @fredleone for allowing us to use his beautiful song!

In a Youth Programs first, we had a chance to create with 19 non-Indigenous dancers from the Featured Hip Hop and Featured Contemporary groups. Along with 21 of our Aboriginal Dance Company dancers, our team created a piece to Baker Boy’s, Somewhere Deep, that showcased their amazing talent through a fusion of Indigenous contemporary and hip hop dance.

Thank you to all the students that performed for us this year and to your teachers for bringing your students all the way across the state to participate.

A special shoutout to some of our Company dance mums, who spent hours hand painting all 200+ costumes.

To our incredible Wellbeing Officer and Company Dance Mum, Kellie, you are a vital member of our team, thank you for all the work you do to support our students.

Thanks to Ashley at the Arts Unit for always keeping things running smoothly, and to our Company and Ensemble managers, Alisha, and Aleta, for helping us out this year.

To our Russell Page Graduate @holly__faulds for her stunning costume designs and handmade woven chest pieces.

To Rosalee Pearson – Grimes, a Yolngu Matha language consultant, thank you for working with our 2 featured singers, to ensure correct pronunciation of the lyrics in Language in Somewhere Deep.

And to photographer Anna Warr for some of these beautiful shots!

We hope you enjoy the show!
