Cruising at 30,000 feet above earth the human tendency to make the universe more complex than life and death takes over my mind. Great plains, forests, mountains, oceans wrap the earth’s surface existing there below me as they have for millions of years. Intricate metropolitan systems freckled by people navigating their own paths, their own thoughts. All the while I’m sitting up here in this magnificent machine that all humankind before me has dreamt about. But here next to me is some dude in pjs picking his nose.

This life I’ve lived has been a beautiful one filled with compassion, patience, joy, love and hate, pride and embarrassment, good food and beautiful people. I’m not religious but seeing the odds of the universe unravel underneath me I consider myself blessed for the life I’ve been offered and can only hope the future holds good things for us all.

Funny thing is when I see a plane in the sky I’m just happy to be down here, at home.

I pulled the seatbelt across my chest and down to the buckle and right next to me, in the back seat of this helicopter, was a small assortment of baby toys.

After two flat tires, chasing down wild camel, an encounter with the worlds deadliest snake, grilling kangaroo meat, countless schooners of piss, millions of flies - this moment stood out to me.

This pacifier seemed so out of place. A symbol of new fragile life in such an unforgiving land. It was a reminder that this is daily life for these ringers. And for a few short days we were able to live it with them.
