✨ CoSTAR National Lab has today announced it has partnered with @ct_global as its main studio technology supplier, responsible for providing the audio-visual and technical services of its flagship R&D Lab based at Pinewood Studios.

The Convergent Media Production National Lab, powering UK and Network-wide access to advanced compute, tools and technologies, will open later in 2026 bringing the future of AI-driven screen and live performance to the heart of UK storytelling at Pinewood Studios.

As the principal technology supplier, Creative Technology will work with CoSTAR and other suppliers to deliver a landmark, fully IP-native media production system, ensuring the studio is both highly scalable and adaptable for a wide range of users across the creative industries. The facility will feature a large modular LED wall and floor, high-end projection mapping, advanced motion tracking and close integration with CoSTAR’s extensive AI compute infrastructure.

✨ CASE STUDY: Conjuring Demo

👉 The Challenge

Live performance is increasingly converging with AI-enabled production tools, creating new opportunities for real-time creative augmentation, wider digital distribution, and more accessible audience engagement. A key challenge is how generative AI can be integrated into advanced production environments in ways that remain artistically controlled, technically feasible and democratised.

👉The Project

In spring 2025, CoSTAR National Lab undertook a prototyping project exploring how audio and visual generative AI systems could be embedded within converged media production pipelines for live performance. The work focused on enabling real-time control of lighting, LED volumes, spatial audio and in-camera visual effects in response to improvised studio performance, while designing workflows orientated towards streaming and emerging immersive platforms. A particular focus was the integration of Nitro Fusion, a fast-rendering image generation tool developed by the University of Surrey.

The prototype demonstrated new workflows for AI-enhanced studio performance, combining physical and digital production elements and exploring how audiences could potentially interact with generative processes at a cost and access level suitable for wider sector adoption.

👉 Next Steps

Building on this first-stage prototype, CoSTAR is progressing further applied research and second stage prototyping informed directly by production testing. The team is also seeking industry partners to trial emerging workflows and creative formats through collaborative R&D, as well as wider tool releases via the Access Programmes, ensuring continuous feedback between research, prototyping and real-world deployment.

🌐Tele Sync is an exciting R&D project exploring connected live experiences across the #LiverpoolCityRegion - created by the @tonto_studio team and hosted at Grassroots music venue Kapsule.

It's one of 4 projects from our R&D call focused on Grass Roots Music Venue Innovation supported through our collaboration with @costarnetwork and supported by @musicvenuetrust

🔗 The experience connected audiences across multiple venues across the #LCR through interactive portals creating a real-time network of shared moments across the city at:

📍 @brookhouse.liverpool

⚡Live performances brought the launch to life - electronic duo @thoseholy and harpist-producer @miamaiiiiii lit up the 360° stage, powered by a quadraphonic speaker system and @sona.lux Spatializer hardware - all designed and built by #LCR Music Innovation talent.

🤝It was amazing to see people across the city interacting with the portals and experiencing something together, in sync.
